Childhood should be spent under a rock
When I was first discovering things about the world, one of my great sources was YouTube. I would be introduced to a social issue after the phrase "In case you've been living under a rock" and then would feel incredible guilt for not having thought to educate myself more about systematic racism before I reached high school.
Perhaps this is my privilege speaking, but I have always believed that the solution to privilege is to make many of the things I have enjoyed rights, available to everyone, rather than the privileged being deprived.
It's OK not to know how terrible the world is as a child. Children's job is to learn the tools that will help them make the world better as they are introduced to its problems, not learn about problems they have no hope of understanding even can be solved.
There are limits to this. Children should learn about things that might hurt people they know, like poverty and racist aggression, but they do not need to understand the vast systems of power that uphold these issues until they are a little bit older.
People need to realize that the solution to any structural problem in the united states is going to be several small solutions building upon each other. There is no one and done with this.
