It sounded ridiculous but, Sunshine had seen the divorce coming. She may have been a child, but she was no idiot. Incessant bickering, separate sleeping arrangements and a dad who preferred his job to his home was a recipe for disaster. She took her parent’s split in strides, accepting that this was probably for the best and really, that’s always been Sunshine’s outlook on life. Staying positive amid the worst of times.
At thirteen, she found her life being uprooted from a spacious three-bedroom home in Quezon City to a small apartment in New Jersey. The move upset her more than the divorce did as she was forced to bid a bitter goodbye to her old home, her old friends and her old life. Still, she swallowed the hard pill of culture shock and put on a brave face. Because even if her dad was a million miles away now, even though her parents couldn’t stand each other and made it very apparent by their long-distance arguing, they agreed on one thing: they had high expectations for Sunshine, and she was to fulfill them all. She was their oldest child, the only daughter out of four children, and she needed to be an inspiration to her siblings. She needed to succeed. Which, for the most part, she did.
She maintained a 4.0 GPA during high school, excelled at her extracurricular work, cared for her brothers when her mother worked late and picked up any of the extra chores her mother couldn’t get to. And though her life was painfully unfulfilled, she remained the epitome of a perfect daughter. Besides, college was right around the corner and she could finally let loose then. Or so she thought. Â
In her eighteen years of life, Sunshine rarely acted out. The one thing rebellious thing she wanted to do – if you could call it that – was major in musical theater. When she was so stressed she felt like screaming every expletive in the book, a good cast album was just the thing to calm her down. It was her thing. Her secret thing (that she now wanted to share with the world), but her thing nonetheless. But that thing, apparently, was out of the question according to her parents. They would pay for her education, but it certainly wouldn’t be for musical theater. And so, came a compromise. She’d choose a different major, but they didn’t have to know about her minor. In fact, Sunshine figured, they didn’t have to know anything. Now that she was away from home, she could finally roll the weight of the world off her shoulders. She didn’t have to be the perfect daughter anymore. She didn’t have to be the perfect anything anymore (well, actually, she still needed to a good student. She wanted to experience college, not get kicked out of it). It was time Sunshine lived up to her own expectations.
