PokeMas makes Rei so funny in the Arc Suit chapters. They really had a scene where Cynthia was digging for dirt on Volo by asking Rei about him and Rei was like “let’s focus on his good qualities like his love for ruins/discoveries!” And then gets happy thinking about the good times he had with Volo. The worst he says about him is he’s elusive, which overall is a pretty neutral statement.
It seems clear in the PokeMas universe, Rei did not spill the tea on what went down on Mount Coronet with Volo. Due to Adaman and Irida seemingly having no idea what Volo’s true motives are. But this did get me thinking about how this is likely the intended interpretation in PLA as well. Laventon clearly knows some details, and that one Security Corps member presumably overhears. But Rei likely downplayed the whole thing as much as possible. Since it seems like he ultimately doesn’t want to turn people against Volo.
I know the true reason nobody talks about Volo post game is because then it would lead players to think he might show back up in some event. And he’s gone from the game so not going to talk about him to get player’s hopes up (also narratively would not make sense to mention him multiple times with no pay off). But taken at face value, it sure is interesting nobody mentions him at all. You’d think someone would mention the merchant who went a little crazy and tried to attack the village hero.
I’m honestly a big fan of Kamado’s character, but based on how he reacts to threats, had Rei told people the full story of what went down with Volo, there is no way Kamado wouldn’t have an extreme reaction. And Rei would know this (he was the one who personally had to suffer through Kamado’s reaction to a perceived threat). There would be a very real chance Volo would become a wanted man. And the punishment if he were caught could easily be something severe. Hell, Kamado has a personal assassin in Beni who Rei knows about. Kamado could just as easily try to go that route to take care of Volo. And as Rei ultimately doesn’t want anything bad to befall Volo, he keeps quiet to protect him.
PokeMas plays it off that Rei is doing this because he believes Volo can change. Which big fan of, I enjoy a protag who thinks he can change the antagonist’s heart through the power of friendship. But I do think it’s easy to interpret Rei’s actions as being an attempt to protect Volo, since he has personally experienced what it means to have Jubilife turn against you. And knows he “got off easy” according to Kamado (who says he should throw him in chains, but exiling him with a chance to prove his innocence is apparently the merciful route).
Anyway, I just think it’s interesting how PokeMas seems to play Rei as almost being protective of Volo. He’s not lying per se to protect him, but he’s definitely leaving a lot unsaid in order to prevent people from turning against Volo and to protect Volo’s reputation. Even to someone like Cynthia who he really should clue in on how Volo is a potential threat.
