ok soooo. regardless of the results of the supernova poll, i think it's relevant that ftl travel was only invented, like, a few generations ago. the captain (STILL FUCKING UNNAMED) is basically a zoomer who grew up with ftl technology, while Cyborg Grandma remembers a time where even the shortest interstellar journeys took decades to get to their destination. idk how this works into the story but it's there.
Do ambulophytes have pseudoskeletal systems?
yes, or at least, the big ones do. i'm undecided as to whether i want them to be made of wood (which would likely be an exoskeleton, since, yknow, those are the epidermal cells of the plant) or of sclerenchyma, the hard, dead cells used to structurally support plants. on earth these are always in the form of fiber (like hemp rope) or sclereids (think, like, the hardness of a peach pit. those are made of sclereids.) i havent yet done extensive research into either secondary growth of plants or how bones work in animals, so we'll see.
quick explanation on why i'm researching fucking. That. i threw out the idea of "walking plants" or "ambulophytes" in a post about my aliens-come-to-earth oc universe, titled sweetwater. then a mutual dmed me asking for more details (we are both nerds) and since then i have become consumed with the desire to explain every little thing about the ambulophytes.
sweetwater is not hard sci-fi, and one of the narrative rules of the universe is that all life in the known universe uses the same basic building blocks, like dna and amino acids. the watsonian explanation is "something something panspermia." the doylist explanation is i'm lazy, this isn't hard sci-fi, and i don't want my characters to die of a prion disease.
to make things easier on myself, ive also decided that the ambulophytes' basic physiology is functionally identical to land plants on earth. these guys could theoretically live off of miracle-gro. they come from a planet strikingly similar to earth during the carboniferous period, and evolved the ability to walk some time prior to a mass extinction that killed off all eukaryotic heterotrophs on land.
anyway. to be a plant-animal they would need a brain, and so ive decided that the parenchyma cells of their leaves and stems developed into neuron-like structures to transmit signals to their limbs. these eventually formed a brainlike structure encased in a sclereid structure.
now to figure out how neurons evolved... i have to figure out how neurons work. and the first problem i see is that animal neurons use potassium and sodium ions to regulate their electric charge. problem: earth plants don't usually utilize sodium in their cells. it's not an essential nutrient, though some plants grow well in salty soils. to play it safe, i'm going to say that the ambulos don't utilize it at all. so what could they use instead?
after extensive research on cations, ive decided that magnesium and calcium ions are the most likely candidates. they've got twice the charge of sodium and potassium but i dooooont caaaaare. however i do apparently care about whether or not those two elements can actually get into the neuron.
hence me reading a research paper on. fucking. magnesium transport structures in cells.
