Runaway To The Stars is a sci-fi webcomic by Jay Eaton. Eaton has said they have no issues with people using their species for fan characters. The most relevant bits of canon lore to Lone Star is as follows:
The earth is in the aftermath of a climate catastrophe that sparked an interplanetary war, leading to orbital bombardment of the planet.
The United States has ceased to exist, being broken up into a “handful” of smaller nation-states. Whooooo's ready to balkanize???
Following the climate wars, a UN summit was held to, among other things, ban hydrocarbon fuels and regulate natal labs.
What’s a natal lab? Oh, yeah, uh, genetic modification of humans is, like, super normal? For both aesthetic and practical purposes. Designer babies got really popular near the turn of the 22nd century, and human society is still dealing with the consequences, such as ‘there's a sizable group of people who can’t procreate on their own’ and ‘people designed with a specific role to fill find it difficult or impossible to function outside that designed role’ and ‘sometimes GM children are accidentally born more animal than human’ etc etc.
Around 50 years after the UN summit, humanity made first contact with extraterrestrial sophonts. At the time, there were two other intelligent species among the stars- The “bug ferrets,” and the “avians.” Much later, contact was made with the "centaur" race.
Since Eaton has said precious little about what happened to the USA in their setting, Lone Star takes place in the Headcanon Zone.
The Republic of Texas is similar to modern-day Italy, in that it was once a local economic powerhouse, but is now dependent upon food exports and tourism.
Due to unsustainable grazing practices and the climate disaster, much of south and west Texas (formerly the Chihuahua Desert, the Brush Country, and parts of the Edwards Plateau) are an uninhabitable wasteland. Hot, arid, nutrient-poor barrens, inhabited only by lichens, triops, and the smallest, hardiest of plants. One day, the ecosystem will stabilize into something resembling scrubland, but that will take hundreds of years. For now, it’s a moonscape.
Houston and the DFW area are both craters. El Paso is uninhabitable. The largest cities are Austin, Amarillo, and Waco.
A large draw for tourism in Texas is rodeo- The sport is either impractical (good luck raising cattle in space) or straight-up illegal (animal cruelty and/or emissions laws) elsewhere.
The most important (read: profitable) area in Texas is the blackland prairie, and it's being lost to desertification despite the nation's best interests. San Antonio was recently declared uninhabitable due to the heat island effect it had in summer outpacing the abilities of its heat pump systems.
About 17 years ago, a coalition led by land developers & natal labs, with funding from the Texan, Zarkoman, and Mexican governments, attempted to create a clade of extremely heat-tolerant GMH designed to live and work in the wasteland. They were called dust-devils, for their horned reptilian appearance. The project got approval to create an initial test population, but the project was cancelled due to “mismanagement."
CHARACTERS
Chriiki
A flightless Avian bright. Chriiki is a second-generation Texliitian, having grown up in a small community of Avians outside of Amarillo. They’ve been riding horses their entire life, and participated in a junior rodeo program as an extracurricular part of the human school they went to. The news of an alien participating in such a quintessentially human sport, and winning, drew attention from many sponsors, who rocketed them up to the big leagues. However, their sudden rise to fame has drawn political attention, with detractors claiming that they only became a professional because of their novelty factor. In addition, concerned rodeo fans wonder if it’s appropriate for an Avian to participate in such a rough sport, given their fragile build and lack of medical support. Chriiki tries their best to ignore the naysayers, though, and has recently joined up with the famous bulldogger Tex as his hazer.
Tex
An anthro GMH. Tex was born to typ parents, but he was designed from conception to be a star. In addition to having the appearance of a longhorn bull, he has enhanced muscle mass, increased stamina, and a higher metabolism. Tex is in his prime, his career is going great, however he still feels empty inside. Tex wants to explore the galaxy, which clashes with Chriikii’s homebody personality.
Xero
A reptilian GMH. Xero was one of the first generation of Dust Devils, but his life turned upside down after he (REDACTED FOR LORE REASONS) Xero ran off into the wasteland that he was designed for, and focused his energy toward survival. Will sell you peyote in exchange for a good meal.
Bishop- A human/avian travel consultant. Typ human with inherited traits (elf ears)
President Dustin Abbott- The former president of Texas. About as left-wing as you can find. Typ human. Heavily promoted the Dust Devil project as a collaboration with Mexico, however, when the project failed, his conservative successor blamed Mexico for the fuck-up.
WHAT’S UP WITH THE DUST DEVILS?
Well, they’ve been designed to survive in extreme desert conditions, with several modifications to their body compared to a typ, or even an aesthetic-forward dragon GMH:
Large ears and a neck sail for thermoregulation.
Almost zero subcutaneous fat. All their fat is stored in their tails, like certain West Asian breeds of sheep.
Scaly skin, with genes taken from the Texas horned lizard & the Australian thorny devil. Keeps water in and dust out. No sweat glands, which seems counterintuitive, until you realize that their scales can actually collect and spread water on their own- a few ounces of water poured on their back will slowly spread over their entire body.
A highly efficient digestive system, meant to get the absolute maximum amount of calories from any foodstuff. I was somewhat inspired by Sheatherius’ “omniphage” thorngrazers.
Mesothermic metabolism. Their extremities go ice cold unless they’re active.
A modified form of ovovivipary, meant to reduce water loss during pregnancy and birth. The placenta of a Devil is similar in texture to a snake’s egg, though it remains inside the parent until term. Devils do, in fact, have mammary glands.
(REDACTED FOR LORE REASONS)
THEMES
the classic argon duo of gender identity & climate anxiety!! yay!!!
i think lone star operates on a philosophical framework i like to call “texan realism.” it is easier to imagine the end of the world, than the end of texas. “texas”, in this framework, is a stand-in for a hodgepodge of american ideals, such as self-reliance, traditional family, christianity, manifest destiny, awe of nature whilst harming it, etc. and lone star highlights how our characters struggle to reconcile those ideals with nature of a world which has advanced far beyond them. texas is not a frontier anymore. the main character is a space alien, for christ’s sake.
if there was an aesop to lone star, i think it would be “texanism is a harmful ideology, to both the planet and to humankind.” as the republic of texas attempts to maintain the pastiche of its frontier past, it causes its most precious resource, the blackland prairies, to slowly turn to dust. it causes its young men to be injured attempting feats of masculinity with roided-up gmo cattle. and it keeps texas grounded, with a tiny, ill-managed spaceport only really used for export of flash-frozen beef. houston, we have a problem.
