Big band music and swing dancing need to have a revival like it did in the 90s. It won’t solve the world’s problems, but at least it’d be fun.
I so I saw your posts about swing dancing classes and at a local bar, and I was just curious how you discovered it and got into it? I’m moving to a new place in a few weeks and it sounds like something fun I want to try, but I haven’t taken dance classes since I was 12… Is it ok for adults who have no idea what they’re doing?
I did not forget about you! I know it been moths and months since I received this ask, but I did not forget about you! This is just who I am as a person!
I would love to tell about swing dancing! I started swing dancing about 4 years ago just as a fun activity to do with my partner. I had just moved backed into a city after living in super rural town for a couple years and was looking for a fun active hobby to do with my partner. We had talked about taking some sort of dance class for years, so I just searched like "dance classes near me" or something on google and literally just picked the cheapest and least intimidating class, which happened to be Lindy Hop with a small local studio. I started off by taking a weekly group class with my partner at the actual studio, but after maybe 4 months of group classes, we just started going to Drop in Dance Nights at a local bar run by the same instructor. I actually switched from Lindy Hop (the OG swing dance) to West Coast Swing, which is a later variation of swing dance, and in my opinion, way easier to learn as a beginner.
Swing is a partner dance, meaning it takes two people (one to lead and one to follow), so you can take a friend with you to dance with, but most classes don't require you to bring a dance partner. Standard protocol for partner dance classes is to rotate through partners (all leads dance with all follows at least once), but most instructors are chill if you don't want to rotate.
I think swing dance is great for beginners, the community is very open to new people, and welcoming of all skill levels, including none at all. I highly recommend taking classing to meet people (and just for fun!) as I met all of my best friends through swing dancing. Not all studios are the same, so if you don't vibe with one, try a couple more. Swing is going through somewhat of a revival, so there's tons of swing communities around.
It's so much fun, and excellent cardio. It's a very rewarding hobby, and I can't recommend it enough.
Thanks for the ask!

Swing dancing the night away!
#dance #westernswing abandon! Shake that Shit off! Thanks, my #friend ...
swing dancing
I don't really
drink that much
and I don't really
dance too much
I don't really give away
much to strangers
never wanted to
and wish I never had
I don't know how to feel
about you
and don't know
if I want to
or need to
but I guess I'd like to try
I'll admit
I liked our dance
and even the
next one too
even though I stumbled
and could barely reply
to you
you were so bold and daring
flirty confident and strong
in a way that makes me nervous
makes me anxious
made me put up all my walls
I don't know
how to feel
I wish I knew
if you were real
I wish I didn't involve ryan
in this mess
i'm spinning out of control
I miss when
life was simple
didn't expect
so much to happen
when I opened myself up
only three weeks ago
now i'm unsure of what to do
and not sure why i'm open to you
is it because i'm codependent
and I liked how you
looked me in the eyes?
I think there was a bit more there
after all I was already on a date
a perfectly good excuse to say no
without being rude
what a strange night we had
I feel so different now
confused and all messed up
do I like you?
do I like him?
I feel sorry for ryan
and I want to run away from everyone
but I want to see you soon
I want to dance with you again
and I really don't know
what to do
because I think you spun me
one too many times
and my head is still spinning
but I like the dizzy feeling
