basically the way I want to handle this is make the Jewel Wizard not human but make him maybe a pony or having to do with Sombra's origin but long ago ponies were brought underground to mine gems. said gems will be magical when the throne or we can rewrite it to the crystal heart shattering causing every crystal pony to have gem eyes because it launched itself into their eyes...the gems being magical started crystalising part of their body and long exposure to the underground gems and crystals causes ponies to crystalise.

Crystalisation affects hooves, cutie marks, ears, wings and horns.

also i really really wanna involve the Umbrum from the mlp g4 comics both are so amazingly dark and i love cutsy stuff that is actually scary. Maybe the Jewel Wizard was one of these in disguise or he created them. These needs to be brainstormed

Im really leaning on the Jewel Wizard being the King of the Umbrum and wanting control back of the crystal ponies to harvest more crystals maybe the crystals are a food source ?

My boyfriend brought up a good idea that the Umbrum could be ghosts/ sprites of ponies that have been fully crystallized like the infection Au's going around. Like swampfever its another infection that instead of turning you into a tree it turns you into crystals. And the crystal splitter open eventually and said crystal ponies become Umbrum.
