When I saw House of Glass by Susan Fletcher for the first time, I just knew I had to read it. There was something about the gorgeous cover and the eerie description that was calling to me⊠I canât explain it! . At the beginning of the 20th Century, a young girl named Clara is confined to her room with Osteogenesis imperfecta (brittle bones), living life through the windows of her home. Claraâs only escape is her books and after her motherâs death, she finally ventures outside again. One day she discovers Kew Gardens and it changes her life completely. She is offered the chance to visit an old house in Gloucestershire and stock a newly-build glass house with plants and flowers. However the house - Shadowbrook - and the gardens are not all they seem and strange things keep happening⊠and no one wants to talk about it! And there are rumours of a ghost⊠. Clara is a fascinating character, depicted as a petulant, forthright cripple but she is so much more than that. Yes, she is blunt and at times, rather obnoxious however I loved her even more for it. She is intelligent and strong and watching her grow throughout the book - from a very naive young girl to an empathetic young woman - was a joy, despite the many cringe-worthy moments! For all her hardships growing up, Clara is without self-pity, and is not overly self conscious, only noting the possible impropriety of her actions after the fact. She transitions from seeing the world in black and white to slowly seeing the grey, and that sometimes the world canât be explained. She learns of its horrors and does not shy away, but rises to meet them, with a strength I really admired! Her character development is superb. . House of Glass is wonderfully paced and the plotting and structure is perfect. I was hooked from the first page and devoured the story over the last few days, whenever I could sneak some reading time in. Add this to your reading piles⊠you wonât be disappointed! . #houseofglass #susanfletcher #booktour #viragopress #ghoststory #bookworm #bibliophile #bookish #fullybooked #booklife #booksbooksbooks #booklover #lovebooks #instabooks #bookreview #bookblogger #bookaholic #bookobsessed (at Liverpool) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bp5Hz3hHOnJ/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1cv7z1nakklod
