PHOTOGRAPHY | JONI STERNBACH - SURFLAND
In un mondo dominato dal digitale, ci consola sapere che esistono fotografi come l'americana Joni Sternbach. I suoi progetti vedono infatti l'utilizzo di tecniche fotografiche ottocentesche, che lei riporta ai giorni nostri, attraverso delle serie fantastiche. E’ il caso del suo progetto ‘SurfLand’, dove immortala i surfisti moderni della East Coast, California, Australia ed Europa, attraverso un processo fotografico al collodio umido (sperimentato per la prima volta da Frederich Scott Archer nel 1852) e una camera oscura portatile, in modo tale da sviluppare le immagini direttamente sul posto. Una performance fotografica, dove si alternano creature suggestive e paesaggi marini, in bilico tra due mondi. Un modo per esplorare il legame fra la terra e il mare, fra surfista e la sua tavola, fra uomo e paesaggio circostante, in un costante stato di transizione. Potete vedere tutte le foto qua.
In a world dominated by digital photography, we’re comforted by the thought that there are phographers like Joni Sternbach. She realizes her projects utilizing 19th century tintype photographic techniques, bringing them to our present days. That’s the case of ‘SurfLand’, an ongoing project of contemporary portraits of surfers of the East Coast, California, Australia and Europe, created using the historic wet-plate collodion process (experienced for the first time by Frederich Scott Archer in 1852) and a portable darkroom, in such a way that the images can be easily developed directly on site. A photographic performance, where the images are about relationships – the relationship between earth and sea, surfer and board, between human and landscape, between photographer and subject, and between the surfers themselves. She has discovered a new sort of home – a place without walls, defined only by belonging and the physicality of existence. Watch the entire gallery here.

#Repost @jstersurf When I photographed Scott last December, I cursed the green grass of Kapiolani Park for absorbing all the light on the ground. But it was a fun shoot and his dog was just so still and awesome! You can see this image and more from my trip to Oahu in the latest issue of Trim Hawaii.
