So every month or two my church invites someone from a local charity to come and do a spiel about what they do and how their work benefits the community, and we take a second offering at the end of the service to benefit that charity. We’ve been doing it for about a year now and it’s been very successful.
Today, the speaker was the executive director of a local non-profit that gives professional, legal advice to immigrants for obtaining legal documents, work permits, citizenship, etc.
As part of her speech, she told a story about one of her clients.
Sometime in the late 90s, a little girl (let’s call her C - she was about five at the time) lived with parents who couldn’t take care of her anymore, so another little girl (let’s call her M) and her mother took C in. The two girls were raised together like sisters.
When they turned fifteen, one of these little girls was able to get her learner’s permit, get her first job, and eventually get her driver’s license and buy a car.
This girl was C.
But M, her sister, who had lived in this country and whose family had taken in C as their own, could not do any of these things, because she didn’t have legal documents.
Until this point, M had wanted to become a teacher. After this, she wondered if she would even be able to get a job.
Then DACA was passed, and M was able to graduate high school and attend college. She went on to teach kindergarten. She married a pastor who spent most of his time counseling young men at a local college - making her essentially the sole breadwinner of the family, supporting both of them on her teacher’s salary.
Her husband had a Bachelor’s in Biology, and wanted to become a Nurse Practitioner, and was finally accepted into a rigorous, full-time program that would allow him to study to become one. But the only way he could attend is if he and M moved to another city and M got a new job, once again supporting both of them entirely on her own.
She did, and her husband was able to begin studying to become a nurse, while M continued teaching little kids.
Then Trump repealed DACA.
Now M doesn’t know if she’ll be able to continue supporting her husband, or herself. She has done nothing wrong. She has never committed a crime. All she wanted is the same opportunities as her sister, the opportunities her sister got just because of the place she happened to be born. But she doesn’t have them, because our current administration believes that just because you were born somewhere else, even if this is the only home you have ever known, even if you have only ever known yourself as an American, that you don’t deserve the same opportunities.
M deserves better than this. Thousands and thousands of Dreamers deserve better than this.

Defend DACA
Living in fear is an awful thing, this happening to the dreamers right now in America. In search of a better life their parents had taken them to a place away from poverty with the clothes on their backs. They've gone through struggles and strifes, hard work and determination, hunger for a better life and have done all they could for a better future for their families. A lot of dreamers are being faced with the threat of deportation back to a country that they left when they were so young they would not be able to remember. These dreamers consist of college graduates, doctors, tax payers, scientists, military and so much more. They have their own families and have fought so hard for a life better than the generations before them. Without these dreamers and their cultures they've added into America you have to ask what would the food be like? What would the music be like? What type of atmosphere and community would we live in? I'm not the type to get political and after writing a huge speech on the subject this morning to be deleted by Instagram because the app froze when I tried to post it, I was kind of reluctant to talk about it again. The first time I wrote this I thought I said it a lot better and didn't think I could write it again. However, as someone who has gone through struggles clearly not as serious as this. Whilst I have a voice and an opportunity I can say something even if it's only heard by one person. People please use your voices as much as you can, it really does matter. This morning I also read an article written by one of my favourite musicians who is Cuban-Mexican and I knew that she had moved to Miami from Cuba at the age of 7 but I never realised the whole picture until I read this. Which I recommend for all of you to read if you managed it this far. Personally it made me cry the whole way through. Her story was so inspiring. I'm so devastated and digusted right now. To think that there's a man so cruel that would just end the dreams of 800,000 young students who didn't even come here by their own will out of spite...I know many DREAMers and they are nothing but nice, hard-working students who want a better life for themselves and their families. If any of my followers support such a thing I ask you to kindly unfollow me. This isn't just a matter of different views, it's a matter of thinking that it's okay to just treat innocent people like outcasts when most of them have been here all their life. I'm just...at a loss for words for how fucked up all of this is.
