Here’s another great video by @pilatesbyvds Hip extension is brought about primarily by the glutes and hamstrings. The hamstrings extend the hips and flex the knees however a question worth asking is why is there is not just one hamstring as opposed to a group of three muscles? It’s partly because muscles work synergistically and are constantly switching roles from prime mover / agonist to synergist to stabilizer, neutralizer and antagonist. As Vanessa’s base of support is a highly unstable rotation disk and she then progresses from a bilateral to unilateral bridge, the hamstrings take on multiple roles and contribute to the anti rotation of the hip. Similarly the glute max is doing most of the work a little higher up but when Vanessa shifts to the unilateral version the glute medius has a lot more work to do to stabilize the hip complex laterally. Then there’s the kick - dynamic hamstring mobilization and hip flexor activation which puts a perturbation through the whole system from lower limb base of support right up to the shoulders. See how long it takes for your hamstrings and glutes to fatigue managing all of these actions and forces. #freeformboard #pilates #bridge #supinebridge #glutes #gluteus #hamstrings #pilatesinstructor #pilatesmat #pilatesbyvds https://www.instagram.com/p/B-t4y5yAW_F/?igshid=1gfe01w49jerk
