[EN] 📷 Today’s photo shows Lake Mamry – calm, still cold, but alive. And since it’s Śmigus-Dyngus, also known as Wet Monday… let’s talk about water. Not the bucket kind, though.
💧Few people remember that this day isn’t just about kids with water guns and soaked socks. It’s rooted in an ancient, pre-Christian ritual of cleansing, fertility, and the awakening of life after winter.
Long before the Church adopted it and added it to the Easter calendar, Slavs and other old cultures splashed water to wash away winter’s death, to attract health, fertility, and abundance. Young women were often the focus – not for fun, but out of belief that water could bring love, children, and vitality.
Back then, water was sacred, like blessed fire or salt. A symbol of life. Of spring's return. Of the rain that wakes the soil.
The custom was so deeply rooted that Christianity couldn’t erase it – it simply baptized it. And now we’re left with this strange holiday where kids splash each other for fun, and adults say: “It used to mean something.” Maybe back then… they just knew what they were doing.

💧Mało kto dziś pamięta, że Lany Poniedziałek to nie tylko dzieciaki z pistoletami na wodę i mokre skarpety. To starożytny, przedchrześcijański rytuał oczyszczenia, płodności i budzenia życia po zimie.
Zanim Kościół przejął ten dzień i wpisał go w świąteczny kalendarz, Słowianie i inne ludy oblewali się wodą, by symbolicznie zmyć zimową martwotę, przyciągnąć zdrowie, urodzaj i płodność. Zwłaszcza młode kobiety były polewane – nie dla zabawy, ale z wiarą, że to pomoże w miłości i przyszłym macierzyństwie.
Woda była wtedy święta, jak dziś święcony ogień czy sól. Symbol życia. Wiosennej siły. Deszczu, który budzi ziemię.
Zwyczaj był tak mocny, że chrześcijaństwo go nie usunęło – tylko ochrzciło. I tak do dziś mamy ten dziwny dzień, w którym dzieciaki leją się wodą, a starsi myślą: "kiedyś to było lepiej". A może... kiedyś po prostu wiedzieli, po co to robią.
