Vicious Tourists?
When I was a kid, Sunriver is where all the cool kids went for spring break. It was a mythical place, so mythical I wasn’t actually sure where it was on the map until recently. It’s a resort town south of Bend. There are four golf courses, 1400 permanent residents, and now a brewery.
No town in Oregon is complete without a brewery. They have one in Boring for pete’s sake. Sunriver Brewing, with a satellite branch in Bend proper, makes the same lineup as any other Bend brewery, three different IPAs, something wheaty for summer, and something dark for winter. I’m really starting to question how so many breweries can be making money in such a small area. Financial wizardry?
Sunriver seems very generic on the surface, but they’ve won some awards, so I figured it was time I gave them a go. Also six packs were on sale. Vicious Mosquito is an IPA brewed with Warrior, Cascade, Centennial, Columbus and Simcoe hops. No Mosaic? No CItra? What is this 2008?
Vicious Mosquito tastes like it sounds, sharp and itchy. It’s got a resinous, piney flavor that builds to a long bitter finish. It lingers on the tongue. The pure yellow body is dry, in the west coast tradition. Is it weird to call it a traditional IPA? It’s not juicy. It’s not tropical. It’s just beer.
