Summary:
Temari had long accepted her fate of an arranged marriage. It is just what their family had done for generations. What she wasnāt anticipating was the man that she was destined to marry.
Happy Shikatema Month my Deers!Ā Iāve absolutely loved all of the submissions for this month.Ā Hereās my tiny contribution. Itās longer than my usual one shots but this prompt was everything.Ā Itās fluffy, smutty, and chock full of ShikaTema goodness.Ā Enjoy it, babes!
It was still such a foreign concept. She should have been anticipating this day. Arranged marriages were just what their family had done for generations. Marriages were business arrangements solely done to garner more wealth and influence. It had been the case for her parents. The respect and love had come eventually. Still, as much as she knew that it was going to happen she wasnāt prepared for reality.Ā
After the deals were made and contracts were signed her father was strangely vague about who her betrothed was. He just assured her that he was from a good family and this was the best scenario for her and their family.Ā She wasnāt allowed to be a part of any of the proceedings. Her father and brothers were her representatives. Temari just accepted her fate and hoped that her family had done their best for her.Ā Her father was a lot of things and being a shrewd and calculated businessman was one of them. She wasnāt going to be married off to a family that wasnāt worthy of her.Ā In the end, whoever she did marry had to be enough in the eyes of her father and that was a tall order.Ā
She was quickly ushered inside and everyone that she met welcomed her kindly. Excited at her presence there. There was something oddly familiar and comforting about this place even though she was sure sheād never been there. Upon coming to the room she was asked to wait in she was surprised to see a table filled with her favorite tea and snacks. Her future husband had done his research.Ā
When she heard the door open her breath caught. The air in the room had shifted. This was it.Ā
He took the chair across from her to sit and silently stare.Ā
Temariās eyes widened as she tried to maintain her composure.Ā This was a turn of events. Once Temari got her wits about she spoke,Ā āI canāt say Iām not surprised.ā
The arrogant yet handsome grin that crossed his face sent a bolt of electricity through her. Years later he still affected her like no one else.Ā
āYou shouldnāt be.ā
He leaned forward placing his chin on steepled fingers to bring them closer together.Ā He seemed annoyed by the space between them.Ā Temari wondered if from this distance he could hear how loudly her heart was beating.Ā
She leaned further away from him.Ā āYouāre right.Ā Given our families' shared histories I should have figured that my father would want to make our alliance stronger.Ā What better way than a marriage?āĀ Ā
The Naras were one of the most powerful and prolific political families across the five nations.Ā Her family had been there from their early ascent into power.Ā Providing money and clout.Ā The Naras in turn ensured that her family had exclusive control over the production and distribution of military arms and weapons.Ā A marriage between their two families would only tighten the stranglehold and influence that they had in Suna, Konoha, and across the other nations. The press would have a field day once news of their engagement broke.
Shikamaru noticeably clenched and unclenched his fist. āDo you believe that this is about something as frivolous as money, power, and political influence?Ā I could give a fuck about all of that Temari. I have all of that. All I care about is you.ā
Temari was sure her gasp of shock was audible.Ā It had been years since theyād seen one another face to face.Ā She only knew what the rest of the world did. Heād made a name for himself while expanding the Nara name and influence.Ā The Genius Nara.Ā He was known far and wide for his political skill and was on his way to being second in command for the Konoha government. How he was doing personally was only garnered through information from his mother. Also, from shamefully stalking a rarely used social media account.Ā It hurt that after having become so close it was nothing but silence for years. As far as she knew the person sitting across from her was a stranger.Ā Ā
Nara Shikamaru had grown up. He was finally taller than her with lean muscles encased by a well-fitting expensive suit. His hair was still in that familiar style but it suited him well. Where at one time heād been awkward and lanky he now sat in front of her confident and handsome.Ā Ā
Despite knowing very little about his current life she did know that Shikamaru was considered one of the most eligible bachelors. Handsome, rich, powerful, and from a storied family.Ā He would be quite the catch. Ā Despite his status, he was never seen with another woman. No one had ever been found to be associated with him. Women would kill for the chance to be in her position but it seemed like all he wanted was her.Ā
Shikamaru stared at her deeply.Ā Those eyes sheād known so well set on her sure and steady.Ā His heavy gaze left her speechless.Ā
āYou sealed your fate that night you kissed me. From that second you were mine.ā

Hello my deers.Ā I had some time, some thoughts and feelings so this was the result. Hope you enjoy it!

Head in the Clouds
**
It was a peaceful and sunny day.Ā The weather was perfect for being outside and Shikamaru gladly took advantage of a rare day off.Ā Against the cool grass, he lazily watched the clouds pass by.Ā It had been a while since he could lay so listlessly about.Ā There was no room for leisure while in the throes of life, death, and war.Ā But he settled into a relaxed state easily.Ā
He drifted in and out as he stared out into the high heavens. He thought about his friends and family. The work that would be inevitably waiting for him the next day. His mind wandered with no destination in mind. Until a curious thing happened.Ā
The clouds above seemed to take various shapes. Unique but familiar, their shapes reminded him of a certain wind-wielding kunoichi. And despite how he tried to convince himself that they were actually different objects they remained as permanent symbols that taunted him from the sky.Ā Ā
Shikamaru reasoned with himself that this was happening because he knew what was to take place tonight.Ā Ā
Temari had mentioned it casually after work on their way to dinner. Sheād been asked out on a date by a jounin whose name heād happily forgotten. The announcement was confusing and surprising so he just nodded and wished her a good time. What else was there to say? Temari was young and attractive. Her brother was the Kazekage, of course, sheād attract attention.Ā This was a good thing. And they were friends. Werenāt you supposed to be happy for your friends?Ā
He tried to forget about that conversation and refocused towards the sky.Ā He would be a liar if he didnāt say that this was the first time that heād thought about Temari and not just while cloud watching.Ā It seemed that more and more simple things would remind him of her. Certain sights, and sounds, always brought him back to her. Temari was now the center of his dreams and it was becoming much more troublesome. It was becoming some kind of strange vice.Ā
It didnāt matter whether he was sitting in silence or thundering chaos his thoughts would inevitably float towards her. What she was doing, how she might approach a particular situation. This would often influence his decisions and sheād become some sort of muse.Ā The harder he fought against thinking about her the more it seemed that she remained stuck in his mind.Ā
It was becoming worrisome that heād considered talking to Chouji about it. He knew that if he admitted to what was going on his friend would insist that he should just ask Temari out. That they should finally just become a couple. Everyone was just waiting for them to be together.Ā
It happened more times than heād like to admit. Those around him asked constantly if they were dating or a couple.Ā Wanting to be proven right.Ā That theyād foreseen the inevitable.Ā Shikamaru would just claim that he didnāt dare think about her that way. That they were just friends and to imagine anything more would be wrong.Ā
It was a claim but not a fact. And to say that heād never considered her as a romantic partner would be a bald-faced lie.
Shikamaru rubbed a hand over his tired face. His beloved clouds provided him no comfort. He needed a distraction.Ā Knowing that she was out there with someone that wasnāt him was making him anxious.Ā
*
**
Barbecue with Ino and Choji was the best form of comfort. They were older now and spending time all together was more challenging but they always found a way. Sitting together eating and drinking made life seem simpler. Maybe just friendships were enough. But heād already imagined what it might be like if she was sitting right there next to him.Ā
āWow Chouji, youāre pretty smitten.āĀ The said man grinned with a nod.Ā
Heād just returned home from a diplomatic mission in Kumo and was delighted to share all the details of his trip. One of which was about a fiery, red-headed kunoichiĀ
āKaruiās different. On the outside, she seems cold and hard to approach. She can be loud and mean but thereās a lot more to her.Ā She wasā¦sweet to me. I canāt explain it.Ā We spent a lot of time there together and even though, in the grand scheme of things we havenāt known each other for a long time, we just get one another.ā
Ino nodded. āI feel that way with Sai. Weāre so different in how we act and think but when we get to it I think a lot of our values and what we think is important are the same.Ā Heās been everything to me since the war ended and through processing all that stuff. Iāve never felt so safe with someone.āĀ Ā
They sat there in silence thinking about how much their conversations had changed over the years. Everything felt more serious now. They knew soon enough their clan responsibilities would only become more intense. Who would share that burden with them was becoming clearer.
āI know Ino and I are new to this but Shikamaru here, well heās been getting to know Temari for years now.Ā Just gotta cross that bridge right buddy.āĀ Chouji teased his friend.Ā
He was thinking about his friendsā reflections on their new relationships that Choujiās comment surprised him.Ā āWhat do you mean? Weāre just friends.āĀ
They both rolled their eyes at him.Ā Theyād heard this argument far too many times now. āYou two arenāt just friends. The three of us are friends.Ā You and Temari, youāre something else entirely.ā
āAnd what is that?āĀ
āSoulmates,ā Ā Chouji told him softly.Ā
Shikamaru waited silently for Chouji to elaborate.Ā
āI donāt know. The two of you just seem inevitable. Since we were kids sheās been in your life.Ā Youāve gone through hell and back together. Sheās just always been there with you. Sometimes I feel like she knows you even better than we do.ā
āIf thatās true, why is she on a date with someone else.āĀ They could sense the bitterness in Shikmaruās voice.Ā
āBecause sheās stubborn and youāre lazy.ā
He couldnāt argue against Inoās characterization of them.Ā
āYou've never shown any interest in her so sheās probably a little scared that youāre not. Sheās not going to make the first move here.āĀ Ino tried to explain.Ā
āHow can you be so sure that she feels that way about me?āĀ He didnāt like how this conversation had evolved but he needed their help.
Ino just shrugged her shoulders ignoring her friendās crisis.Ā
āItās a hunch and just an observation. When sheās here, youāre together. Sheāll seek you out. When Iāve hung out with her, her favorite thing to talk about is you. Temari doesnāt get close to people. But for some reason, a shinobi that she met as a child, who beat her during an exam, who she scolds, criticizes, and trusts is her best friend.Ā But that doesnāt seem like a good enough title for what you two are and how you are when youāre together.ā
āThatās fine and all. but it doesnāt mean that she likes me in that way. Iām not even sure how I feel.ā
āHow can you not be sure?āĀ Ino demanded becoming annoyed at his sheer stubbornness.Ā
Shikamaru tried to find the words to explain.āI mean yes, weāve been through a lot together. We hang out when sheās here. I trust her with my life. Iāll think about her a lot when sheās gone. Itās kind of annoying. If she was closer then maybe I wouldnāt think about her so much. Sheās beautiful, sheās strong and resilient. Sheās honest to a fault but I know in her own way thatās how she shows that she cares. It feels like itās been so long now that I canāt imagine not having her in my life.Ā When I think about my future, I want her there.ā
Chouji and Ino let him stew in quiet. āWell, it sounds like you have some decisions to make. You two can carry on how you have been and remain friends.Ā But at some point, either she or you will find someone. Where will that leave you and your relationship?
Shikamaru sat there reflecting on what theyād said. Temari was just on a first date with this guy. It didnāt mean that they were going to get married.Ā But the possibility did remain that it could lead down that path. And if it wasnāt this particular person whoās to say it wouldnāt be the one after him. And if she was the one to move on he knew that heād have to live still seeing her everywhere.Ā
*
**
Shikamaru inevitably found himself waiting for Temari to come home. He remained hidden until he was sure that she was alone then made his presence known. If she was surprised by him being there it didnāt show.Ā
He couldn't help but feel a bit self-conscious. She looked gorgeous dressed in civilian clothes with her face made up. It was less pleasant when he remembered that she didnāt look this way for him.Ā
āShikamaru, can I help you with something?āĀ
āCan we go take a walk?Ā Hang out for a little?āĀ He asked hopefully. On any normal day, they would have spent time together. After not seeing her all day he felt off-balance.Ā
Curiosity and concern were fueling Temari and so she agreed. It was obvious something was weighing heavily on his shoulders. He believed that he could suppress his emotions well but he couldnāt hide anything from her.Ā
They walked together in sync. He didnāt even have to guide her steps; she just seemed to know instinctively where to go. Was he really that obvious? Or did she just know him that well?Ā
They spoke with one another freely. The conversation always flowed so easily between them. This was normal and Shikamaru finally felt like he was on solid ground until they settled into their familiar place.Ā Ā
It was a specific spot in the Nara forest.Ā A singular place where the canopy of the trees didnāt block their view of the sky. How many times had they been there together? Either for cloud watching or star gazing. Or sometimes just for no reason at all. They would just sit, comfortable and silent. Together and away from the chaos of the world.Ā
Shikamaru felt the question trapped in his throat.Ā Insecurity and worry got the better of him that he had to ask.Ā
āHow was yourā¦uhm date?ā
Temari looked at him surprised before shifting her gaze back to the sky. āIt went well. He was polite and charming. I can imagine that weād get along.āĀ Ā
āGood, Iām happy for you.ā
Temari peered at him curiously. āAre you really?ā
āWhat do you mean?ā
She just shook her head. āI guess that this is to be expected. You said days ago that no matter what happened weād always remain friends. And Iām thankful for thatā¦ā. Her thoughts trailed off and they sat there in heavy silence.Ā
āHe asked me if Iād want to go out with him again but I wasnāt sure what to say.āĀ She stopped again before sighing.Ā
āSorry, I must be tired, I can't think straight. I should go.āĀ Temari began to get up but he settled a warm hand against hers.Ā
āClouds.ā
āWhat?āĀ She responded confused. Why did everything go back to the clouds with him?Ā
āI see you in them. I try not to but youāre there.ā
āOh.ā
His heart and mind were racing. āBut itās not just the clouds.Ā I find you in crowds and during my walks in the forests that I have to do a double-take. Before I sleep and when I dream. Youāre there.Ā Even now under these millions of stars, itās just you.Ā At first, I was confused and a little annoyed but I realized that I like that youāre constantly on my mind. That even when Iām not with you. Youāre here.āĀ He moved their joined hands against his heart.Ā
Now that it was out in the open there was no stopping him.Ā
āWhen I told you that weād always be friends I meant it but it hurt to believe that perhaps weād only ever be friends.Ā I tried to hide it, wish it away, and pretend but I canāt do that anymore. Temari, itās you. And whether you give me a Summer or a lifetime Iāll be happy for it.Ā Do you think maybe youād like to be with me? That perhaps together we can be something more.ā
Temari was worried that when she slipped into his arms he could feel her heart racing. Even worse when she felt him place a kiss against her head.Ā
His admission sat heavily in her heart. The weight behind his words and actions and what this would mean made her stomach flutter.
āSo you can finally admit you like me?āĀ She teased him with a grin.
He stared at her in shock, but she had always been more perceptive than him.Ā āYou knew?āĀ Ā
Her hand gently ran through the strands of his hair āNot exactly, I just felt something⦠unusual with you.Ā You treat me differently, itās nice and it made me feel special that you chose me.Ā I donāt even think you realized it.āĀ
Even though heād been consciously trying to hide his feelings, subconsciously heād been making it known.
She rested her head against his shoulder. Her breath fluttering against his neck made him shiver.
āI think about you all the time too. It gets so much worse and harder when Iām in Suna.Ā Sometimes itās like the sand makes shapes of you and reminds me that youāre far away.āĀ She relished in the way his arms wrapped tighter around her. A strong reminder that he was there with her.
āGrowing up the way we did in Suna my brothers and I never really had friends. Iām not even that sure when you and I became friends. But it means so much to me that I never wanted to do anything that could upset that balance. At the end of the day, I canāt stand the idea of losing you. I agreed to go out on that date because I thought it might make things less complicated between us.Ā That weād remain in this neutral and safe place.Ā I think though that weāre meant for something beyond friendship and itās worth taking that chance.ā The smile that he adored so much crossed her lips.Ā
āAnd I think the greatest risk that Iāve ever taken was falling for my best friend.āĀ Temari melted when Shikamaruās lips met hers.
Safe and warm she never wanted to be anywhere else. Shikamaru held her strong and steady against his chest. Noticing how perfectly she seemed to fit against him. He kissed her again and again. He hoped his actions said more than his words ever could as a hundred different emotions raced through him. Just friendship between them would never be enough, not after knowing how it felt to kiss her.Ā Ā
He knew that everything in life had its possibility of troubles. Sure this would inevitably change their relationship and it could lead to some dark places but he also knew that there was hope and possibilities. And that there were many things in life worth fighting for.Ā
This was one of them.Ā Ā
Shikamaru held onto Temari, taking in the moment that had been years in the making.Ā Unspoken promises were shared between them.Ā Theyād remain who they were. Their relationship would just be built on the strong foundation theyād made and it would become so much greater.Ā
A sincere smile appeared on his face as he stared at her.Ā He could easily see their life and future reflected in her eyes and it was one that heād gladly work towards.Ā
āSo you and me?āĀ She asked with a grin, hope, and excitement reflected in her vibrant eyes.
He smiled softly at her before kissing her gently. Ā That sounded just fine to him.
āForever.āĀ

Hello my pretty flowers!Ā Iāve missed you all.Ā Iāve been in a Sai/Ino mood so hereās a quick little ficlet from me.Ā Enjoy!Ā
Summary: After a horrific mission gone wrong Sai becomes closed off and reclusive.Ā Ino takes it upon herself to bring him some light.

DeliveredĀ
**
Ino adjusted her hair before bidding her father a quick goodbye. The flower shop had begun to introduce flower delivery and while it wasnāt what she typically did she offered to fulfill todayās deliveries. She enjoyed going to the village to drop off these little bouquets of joy. Todayās last stop was a special one though.Ā
On her way to her final delivery, her steps felt heavy.Ā Ino hoped that her appearance at his home wouldnāt be too alarming.Ā Sheād heard about the mission and while she was thankful that Sai had returned home in one piece sheād heard just how badly heād been injured. So much so that Kakashi removed him from active duty. Ā The details of the mission were highly classified so she could only speculate as to what happened.Ā But for something to affect a former Root member so drastically, it must have been bad.Ā
Sheād tried multiple times to see him at the hospital but heād refused any visitors. When he was finally allowed to return home that was where he stayed unwilling to leave and did not allow anyone to see him. She was not going to give up though.Ā
The outside of his home was beautiful. There was a well-maintained garden and trees that provided a reprieve from the sun. Realizing that this was the first time sheād ever seen his home showed just how much she still had to learn about him. It seemed like a shadow loomed over the house.Ā The shutters and blinds were tightly closed not allowing for light or anyone to come inside.Ā
Taking a breath she knocked on the door.Ā It was met with silence so she made another attempt.
āGo away.āĀ
āSai, Sai itās me Ino. I just have a delivery for you.āĀ
āWhat? I didnāt order anything.āĀ She could sense the irritation in his response.
āI know but, please.āĀ Sai didnāt know whether it was genuine curiosity or the slight pleading in her voice but he met her at the door just opening it slightly sure to remain in the dark.Ā She could only see half of his face clouded by shadows.Ā
Ino held out a beautiful arrangement of purple flowers. Meticulously ordered and set, bright and lovely it reminded him of the girl making the delivery.Ā
Confused and a little taken aback, he shook his head. āI didnāt order flowers.ā
āItās just something small, from me.Ā I wanted to see you, and ā¦well if you need anything please let me know.āĀ
Without giving him an opportunity to refuse the gift she pushed the arrangement into his chest. He caught it before it could fall.Ā
He sighed at the beautiful but invasive blonde. āIno, you didnāt have to do this.ā
āI know that I didnāt.Ā I wanted to.āĀ When he didnāt respond she continued.
āSai, you donāt have to tell me what happened during your mission. You donāt have to say anything at all but Iām here for you and itās not just me. Your team, your friends. Weāre all here for you.Ā Youāre not alone anymore, donāt forget that.āĀ
He felt her sincere words resonate within him.Ā She was right, of course she was. But he had so many routines and habits that he still needed to break.Ā And relying on others was something he still needed to learnĀ
āThank you, and uhm thank you for these I guess.ā
āOf course.āĀ She felt a smile cross her face at his sincerity.Ā
āHopefully Iāll see you soon.āĀ She waved making her exit and he watched carefully till he couldnāt see her anymore. Those precious flowers sheād given him clutched tightly against his chest.Ā
He placed the flowers on the table near his art supplies. Their vibrant colors brought a little life into the dark space.Ā
Sai had lived through trauma, violence, and war. He was familiar with the pain it brought. This particular mission had affected him like no other. Sure he had survived but heād been left with not only physical but mental scars.Ā He tried to shake away the intrusive thoughts.Ā
He sat in front of a blank canvas, his eyes still set on the vibrant bouquet. His team, teachers, and friends had all come to see him but heād rebuffed their attempts. Ino had gotten the closest. This was the most light that heād felt in weeks.Ā
His hands automatically began to move across the white canvas filling it with bright colors. He hadnāt created anything for a while now but he felt different. As though Ino had taken the heaviness that had been sitting on his chest with her.Ā
Hours later he stared at the completed painting feeling a sense of accomplishment. Colors filled the cracks in his skin.Ā Creating again felt like being back on solid ground. And a beautiful girl with a handful of flowers was to thank for that.Ā
He made a decision and dialed a number.Ā
āHello, Iād like to make an order for delivery.āĀ
~
This went on for a few weeks. Sai would order flowers and Ino would deliver them.Ā Sometimes they were grander arrangements, other times simple bouquets.Ā While she dropped off the flowers Sai remained hidden inside his house behind the door but he greeted her far more kindly.Ā He was willing to talk to her more each time. Sheād sometimes bring him different treats. Small things she learned that he enjoyed and ones that she did.Ā Little by little, despite the space he wanted to make with the world, they became closer.Ā
Sai didnāt know if he could truly ever express how much her quick visits meant to him.Ā There were so very few things that brought him peace or joy, but she did.Ā The happiness she gave him during those small interactions was enough to get him to the next day, to strengthen and encourage him. So much so that heād even begun to reach out to his team.Ā But as much as he wished for more he didnāt think that it was possible.Ā Ino deserved light, someone that could offer far more, but he couldnāt let her go.Ā So for now heād live in this limbo.Ā Enjoying the light as long as he could.Ā

**
āYou got a complaint yesterday.ā
Ino was taken aback by the information shared with her the second she walked into the flower shop.Ā
āWhat?Ā From who?ā
āA grumpy Shinobi who was upset that his flowers weren't delivered by a certain blonde. I donāt know who he talked to but I guess youāre the only one heāll accept deliveries from.āĀ She mused, eyeing Ino with a grin.Ā Everyone knew that Ino was making these special deliveries.
Speaking of which, here.āĀ She handed her a gorgeous assortment of roses.Ā
āHeās expecting them.āĀ Ino sighed but nodded, taking the flowers in her hands.Ā
Still, Ino could admit that not seeing him yesterday was disappointing. As short as their interactions might have been they were still one of the most enjoyable parts of her day. They were small, imperceptible changes but she saw him opening up to her. The blinds were not closed as tightly. Some of the arrangements heād ordered sat on the window sill. Glimmers of light seem to appear in his eyes once again.Ā
When she arrived at his home he surprised her by meeting her beyond the front door stomping his way over. Under the sunlight, she could see clearly a constellation of scars cut across his face. His rough hands took the heavy arrangement from her to place delicately to the side.Ā
āWhere were you yesterday?āĀ He demanded, but she could see the worry in his eyes.Ā Ā
āHello to you too.Ā Why? Was there something wrong with the delivery?ā
He nodded.Ā āYes, I waited for hours and when my order finally arrived it wasnāt you.ā
āSai thatās not a reason to be upset.ā
He knew that heād overreacted but heād been genuinely concerned.Ā āYou said that you were going to be coming back and when you hadnāt I panicked.Ā I got worried about whether you were okay so I called the store.Ā And when they told me that you werenāt making deliveries I assumed that I had somehow upset you.āĀ
āSai, you canāt assume such things. Besides, I'll let you know if I am upset.Ā I got pulled for a mission yesterday so I couldnāt come. I should have let you know.āĀ She appreciated how concerned heād been about her but at the same time, he couldnāt just expect her to ignore her other responsibilities.Ā
A soft smile crossed her lips.Ā āYou can just ask me to come by. You donāt need to keep ordering flowers.ā
She noticed the slight flush that crossed his cheeks.Ā āIā¦I thought that this would be the only way that youād continue to come see me.ā He admitted looking down.Ā
Her heart broke for him, she knew just a little about his history but she didnāt know how deeply his scars ran.Ā Ā
āIāll be honest.āĀ He looked at her confused and worried as she avoided his gaze.Ā Ā Ā
āI donāt do flower deliveries. When I brought them to you that first day it was only my third time making deliveries. The other times Iāve come here was only to bring you your flowers.āĀ
The admission floored him. Making him feel special and chosen.Ā Before he could stop himself he asked the question that had been hanging over his head for weeks.
āWhy do this? Iām not your teammate, before this, we hardly interacted. What have I done to deserve your kindness or attention.āĀ
When she tried to reach for his hand he tensed up but allowed her to take it in her gentle grasp. āSai, you donāt have to do anything to deserve those things. Relationships arenāt transactional. I do this because I genuinely care about you, because youāre a member of the Leaf, because youāre my friend but especially because I know youāre hurt. What kind of person would I be if I didnāt try to help?Ā Besides, I like seeing and talking to you. I enjoy being around you.ā
He looked at her, the sincerity in those sky blue eyes catching his breath. āIād like to keep seeing you, and not just within this context. Perhaps this weekend? Iāll cook for you.āĀ Ā
He knew that this was a big step. He would not only have to venture out into the village for supplies and he hadnāt had a guest in his home for a while now.Ā But it gave him some hope that perhaps if he was willing to make these leaps sheād accept him as broken and bruised as he was.Ā
āIād like that.āĀ
She looked behind him, the door that heād kept so tightly locked up burst open flooding his home in light. The scars heād tried to hide from her and everyone so strikingly on display under the sun. When he felt her hand reach up to gently touch those marks seared across his neck heād realized what heād done. He was open and vulnerable but it felt okay because she was there with him.Ā
āI was so relieved to see you.Ā I didnāt think.Ā Getting to you was more important.āĀ He admitted placing a kiss against her palm.
She felt tears appear in her eyes. Relief and hope settled over both of them.Ā
He picked up the arrangement heād placed to the side to hand them to her.Ā
āThese were actually meant for you.āĀ He admitted and knew that heād do anything to keep that smile on her face.Ā
āYou know, despite working at a flower store no one has actually given me flowers before.āĀ Ino mused.Ā She had a feeling that she was destined for many more.
āI donāt know if you have other plans but perhaps youād like to come in?āĀ The idea of waiting even just a few more days to see her felt maddening.Ā Ā
She nodded and laced her fingers with his before making their way inside.Ā Healing wasnāt easy.Ā They both had their own demons to fight but it was possible and worth it. Ā Individually they were strong but together they were a force of nature.Ā

At Home with You

Ino
āThere you are!āĀ Curious brown eyes looked up hearing a familiar voice. Inojin grinned watching the deer trot over towards him excitedly.Ā
Inojin pet the deerās fur affectionately, thankful that he seemed to still remember him.Ā āIām sorry I havenāt been around a lot lately.āĀ The animal didnāt seem to mind and welcomed the loving touches.Ā Ā
āCome on buddy, letās take a walk. Iāve got some time before I have to go home.ā Inojin could have sworn there was some understanding in those soft eyes as the animal fell into step with him.Ā Ā
The peace and solitude the dense forest provided was much needed after so many difficult and grueling missions. He found solace in the twilight with his faithful companion by his side.Ā
The pair took breaks along their walk to eat and drink. Their gait relaxed and steady with no goal or end in sight. Inojin would feed the animal treats and pet his soft fur.Ā All the while the deer nuzzled in familiarity into his gentle hands.Ā
Coming to a stop they relaxed by the water. Inojin reclined into the deers side to sketch the landscape. Nestling into the deerās soft fur and comforting warmth.Ā It was this quiet slice of heaven away safe from the noise.Ā
āSo this is where youāve been running off to?āĀ
Inojin looked startled, surprised by the amused looks on his Uncle and Auntās face.Ā
Subconsciously Inojin stepped forward placing himself between the deer and them.Ā
āWe donāt mind you coming here but you need to let your parents know where you are.āĀ Temari gently scolded him.Ā Ā
Shikamaru looked curiously behind Inojin. A familiar deer posed as though it was ready to defend its friend if necessary.Ā
āI assume your visits have to do with the deer behind you?āĀ
āI come by when I dont have missions to see him.āĀ Inojin admitted with a sigh.Ā There was no way to lie his way out of this.Ā
Temari and Shikamaru were surprised by the revelation.Ā Shikamaru recognized the deer as the injured one that Inojin had found and he had treated.Ā He remembered Inojin being terrified and distraught, hoping the deer might make it through. They didnāt quite realize how much of an impression the experience had made.Ā
Temari had seen him earlier heading towards the forest where he was able to walk about freely. It seemed odd though that he was going there alone.Ā
āWhy didnāt you tell us?āĀ
Inojin shrugged, not really having a response. He thought it might be embarrassing to admit having grown attached to the deer.Ā Ā
āI couldnātā¦I couldnāt save Akkun. So when I was able to save this one I felt connected to him I guess.āĀ Ā
They knew all about that little creature that heād bonded with during the mission in Iwagakure. Ino and Sai had considered getting him a pet to help with his grief but worried it might be too soon.Ā
Shikamaru moved forward towards them, kneeling in front of him.Ā āYour grandfather used to love walking through here too.āĀ Ā
āReally?āĀ Inojin asked surprised but always happy to learn anything he could about his grandfather.Ā
āThe Yamanaka jutsu can be very difficult mentally and spiritually. He always found reconnecting with nature as a way to reset.Ā He even had his own favorite deer. Shikadaiās grandfather would complain that he was out here more than him.āĀ Shikamaru remembered when his father would go out into the dense forest to check on his friend.Ā
āInojin attachments and bonds are a wonderful thing. Companionship and friendship make life meaningful.Ā They arenāt something you ever have to hide.ā Inojin smiled up at Temari, her words having a lifetime of experience behind them.Ā
āDid you give him a name?āĀ
āAki, I found him on the first day of Fall.āĀ Ā
āWell thank you Aki for taking care of Inojin here.āĀ Ā
Shikamaru kindly rubbed the deerās head.Ā Sure the Naras were known for their connection with these animals but he was thankful that Inojin saw their value as well.
āLet your mom and dad know, okay kid. That way they wonāt worry.āĀ Temari guided him gently.Ā She could understand his draw towards the Nara forest.Ā She would often escape there just to have some quiet.Ā Ā
Inojin nodded, grateful that he didnāt have to keep his trips a secret.Ā That he could tell his parents and his teammates about his friend.Ā Heād been wanting his parents to come join him for a while now.Ā
āLet Shikadai know youāre coming out here.Ā Heās supposed to be guarding and keeping this place secure.Ā Seeing as youāve been able to come in and out undetected means heās not doing his job.āĀ He laughed but hoped his friend wouldnāt be too upset.Ā
The trio remained out there in the fading sunlight as more deer came forward recognizing the clan heads.Ā Enjoying the mystery and wonder of it all.
Inojin at times was just like his father.Ā He struggled with certain social cues and norms.Ā Often finding himself confused by some customs. But he found there in the quiet of the forest, with his faithful friend, and family a feeling of home.Ā
Shika
Shikadai took a tentative taste before a thoughtful look crossed his face.Ā
āIt needs something.āĀ
Karui took a spoonful of the broth before nodding. āYouāre right. Go ask your Uncle Chouji for more tomatoes.āĀ Ā
Shikadai went into motion and made his way over to where the Akimichi was prepping the ingredients.Ā ChoCho would often complain about her parents but Shikadai found them to be warm and welcoming.Ā Always genuinely happy to see him.Ā
āWeāre gonna need more diced tomatoes.ā
āYou got it, kid.āĀ
Shikadai wasnāt sure when it happened exactly. Heād been over at the Akimichiās one night for dinner and had been roped into helping. Despite his silent complaints, heād actually enjoyed the cooking process.Ā It was almost like a science experiment. Mixing the ingredients to get the perfect reaction. After that day heād come by ever so often to learn more techniques and to try out various recipes. Who better than an Akimichi to teach him to cook? ChoCho loved it when he came over, as he often made enough for her to try a new dish.Ā Ā
Today he had something special planned. His uncles had sent him a recipe for his mom's favorite dish from Suna. He wanted it to be a surprise so heād made his way to the Akimichi kitchen.Ā
āMy dad taught your grandfather how to cook,āĀ Chouji told him with a grin. Shikadai looked up, never having heard this story.Ā
āWhen they were younger your grandmother was just as good of a cook as she is now.Ā Uncle Shikaku wanted to impress her.Ā It was a complete failure.Ā Apparently, he managed to burn through not only the food but multiple pots and pans.Ā He was banned from cooking on Akimichi lands for a while.Ā After my dad forgave him he gave him a few less-flammable lessons.Ā It wasnāt too helpful but there was some improvement.Ā Your father is no better.Ā For being geniuses they sure are useless in the kitchen.Ā You might be the only hope for the Nara line.ā
Shikadai smiled at the thought.Ā His mother had mentioned something similar to him when heād helped her a few times.Ā It wasnāt a skill that Naras were known for nor would it be one that he advertised.Ā Still, it was a useful ability and oftentimes a needed distraction.Ā
Karui yelled a few additional items they needed and he stood next to Chouji prepping the additional items.Ā Ā
They added the required ingredients, checking the flavor as he went along.Ā The two Akimichis watched him with a smile at his attention and precision.Ā Temariās look of pure determination on his face and his movements were all Shikamaru.Ā Like the dish he made, he was a perfect mix.Ā
āIāve got to hand it to you kid.Ā Youāre a natural.Ā Youāre always welcomed in my kitchen.āĀ Karui praised him after tasting the completed recipe.Ā
She affectionately ruffled his hair. āYour mom is going to love it.āĀ
Shikadai recalled those precious times together around a table with warm food between them.Ā Ā
A home-cooked meal was the perfect reminder of home.
Cho
āThanks again for coming by!Ā Your wife is going to love the flowers.āĀ ChoCho yelled out to the customer.
She then worked to spray down the counter then watered a few of the plants.Ā It was a quiet day at the store but she loved it nonetheless.Ā The Yamanaka flower shop was one of her favorite places in the village. She was getting older.Ā Their team missions were more complicated and layered. For her. working at a place that was so normal was a needed reprieve.
It started a few weeks ago.Ā Inojin had begged her to cover his shift while his parents were off on a mission.Ā She agreed only after he offered her a kingās ransom in snacks and a no-questions-asked favor to be cashed in the future.Ā After getting a quick training session and learning the ropes she thoroughly enjoyed her time there.Ā She was in the company of flowers and got to meet and interact with people all over the village.Ā It was a natural fit.Ā From then on ever so often Inojin would ask her to fill in.Ā Sheād whine and complain which increased Inojinās offerings but sheād ultimately agree.
āChoCho!āĀ She smiled brightly seeing the Yamanakas walk in.Ā They knew that she was there for the afternoon but assured her theyād be back as early as possible.Ā Ā
ChoCho idolized Ino.Ā TheĀ Yamanaka Clan head was strong, wise, and beautiful.Ā ChoCho loved her mom but she was still an authority figure.Ā Ino was her cool Aunt.Ā Since she could remember the blonde had assured her that sheād be a willing confidant and support.Ā There were a few times that she elicited her help and advice.Ā Ā
āWe appreciate you coming by to help us,āĀ Sai thanked her with a soft smile.Ā He wasnāt a man of many words but he was always kind and welcoming towards her.Ā His smile reminded her very much of her teammate.
āI love it here.Ā I get to see so many people and hear a lot of different stories.āĀ Her favorites were always of nervous individuals hoping to find that perfect bouquet to impress a special someone.Ā
āItās a pretty special place.Ā Your grandfather still buys your grandmother flowers every month on the 7th.Ā When I'd come here to help my dad I always loved seeing him come in.Ā I'd help him pick out the flowers to give her.āĀ ChoCho fondly thought about the blossoms that would consistently fill their home.Ā She couldnāt help but love how connected their families were.Ā Ā
Ā Sai helped her move a few buckets of flowers to refill the shelves.Ā āWhen your father started dating your mom he didnāt know what her favorite flower was so he ended up just buying all of them,āĀ Sai recalled that day.Ā Ā
Heād come to spend time with Ino when the Akimichi had come in a panicked state.Ā Their team had argued back and forth about the best arrangement of flowers until Shikamaru convinced Chouji to just buy them all and figure out Karuiās favorite later.Ā
ChoCho grinned surprised by the sweet story.Ā Surprised that the old man had some moves back in the day.Ā Ā
Her father had come by earlier to her embarrassment but they had worked together to arrange a beautiful bouquet for her mother. She often wondered at their relationship but their love was something undeniable.Ā ChoChohoped that her teammates took notes about how to treat those they loved.Ā
ChoCho fell into step with the Yamanakas helping to clean up before she was set to leave.Ā And of course, she was on her way to see her team.Ā Ā
āYouāre always welcome here, you know that right?āĀ Ino assured her. She had a special bond with the Akimichi.Ā It wasnāt always easy being the female in their trio.
Surrounded by a melody of flowers and the warmth of family, this was just like a second home.Ā Ā
āI know.ā

The 17th generation of InoShikaCho sat together in the cramped booth talking about everything and nothing all at once.Ā A similar scene of love and familiarity having occurred many times in the past.Ā Ā
At times the pressure to uphold their familyās legacy could be suffocating.Ā Certain heavy expectations and hopes were placed on their shoulders.Ā But they knew at the end of the day they were luckier than most.Ā They were teammates and best friends.Ā Not just by circumstances but by choice.Ā No matter what happened in this life, because of that bond theyād always have a home.Ā

Did you see what I was trying to do here?Ā I love the customs that each family has but I like to see them interacting with each other.
Life got pretty hectic so writing needed to take a back seat.Ā Iām thankful that I was able to write what little I could.Ā I hope to be posting more regularly soon.Ā Thanks for your support and good vibes.Ā
Ā My sincere love, thanks and admiration for everyone who supported this week!Ā You are all amazing!Ā Love, love to you all!
Alright. I have a lot of feeling that I needed to work through after the infamous episode 178. I donāt love what theyāve done with Temari by any means but I do love these images side by side. Iāve been thinking about how Temari grew up in Suna. Basically parentless, with a murderous brother and a tumultuous day to day existence. So in that sense Iām thankful that yes she is a housewife and a mother. That thereās a semblance of peace and normalcy in her daily life. Iād like to believe that she still goes on missions, trains InoShikaCho, fucks her husband good and well and takes care of the home and clan. If this wasnāt what she wanted she wouldnāt be there.
Iāve written 20+ stories about Shikamaru/Temari and in each one I characterize her a little different because sheās a complex character and I think that we can see little pieces of ourselves in her. Thatās why so many of us love her and are very protective of her.
Anyways this a a long, unintelligible rant about how much I love this family, all incarnations of them and InoShikaCho. Iāll keep writing about them because thereās so much that we donāt get to see. ā¤ļøš
