I think something that gets forgotten is how in the very early chapters of his story, Chang Geng is clearly a depressed teenager lmao. His mother who wasn't even his mother hated his guts, and she basically just sat there and told him after raising him since he was an infant that he should suffer a long and horrible death lmfao. I still get whiplash from that moment tbh, but to answer the question -- that same day when the village he thought he had born into, that he would spend his whole life in was attacked was really such a game changer for his life.

I think he carried a lot of confusion and anger that day. It was a lot of upheaval all at once, he lost his home, his family, and the thought that there was one person in the world who cared for him unconditionally. Ofc, he eventually forgave Gu Yun but I really think it did tear him up for a while to feel he was lied to about his identity and also Gu Yun's as the marquis.

After Chang Geng learned his identity as the emperor's son on TOP of the bone impurity curse growing inside of him, I think was when he was most lost. He spent so much time soul searching and practicing Liao Ran in Buddhism to cultivate this calm, knowledgeable demeanor but there was always a storm of confusion and hurt underneath it. I think it wasn't until Gu Yun changed his mind, and became his priority and inspiration that Chang Geng overcame his fear of becoming a weapon and saw that instead he could use his power, wit, and strength to instead save the nation.
