Oh Gong's feelings have been proven to the audience, but not so much to him or Sun Mi in-story -- mostly because the moments of proof are in how he talks to others about her, or when he does something for her without her knowing. So WE know, but Sun Mi hasn't seen what we have, and Oh Gong doesn't trust himself enough after hearing the death bell fate. So neither fully believe misfortune won't befall them if they remove the ggg.

The bookseller took away “what made her special” – which is more than one thing: her deal with Oh Gong, her fate as Sam Jang, and her ability to see ghosts. She basically took away her childhood and left the adult Jin Sun Mi.

This makes sense - she lost everything that made her special.

Interesting read! But while the storytelling certainly has Christian elements, Star Wars (and the Jedi in particular) are more Buddhist and Taoist than anything. e.g. Luke, the Yin, saves the day by embracing pacifism + letting go of the fear of death/loss. Anakin, the Yang, falls to the Dark Side because of his fear of loss/death. The focus on meditation, inner calm, balance, and practicing non-attachment being the basic tenants of Buddhist AND Jedi thought. etc. :)

I agree about Sun Mi, as well, but again we have a precedent in the source material to blame for how she’s starting out. The Monk is kind of a helpless character in Journey to the West. I’m actually really glad they gave her a steel backbone and a large well of self-respect, because the Monk in JTTW is pretty weak and helpless.

I’m assuming, since this is a Hong Sisters drama, Son Oh Gong will de-jerkify by the end of the drama. They like to send their male leads on journeys of maturation. Since in this case their male lead is Sun WuKong, the Monkey King, we kind of HAVE to have him start out ridiculously amoral – the character is notorious for his selfish trickster nature in Journey to the West, and sometimes is portrayed as an actual villain character in certain adaptations.

Thanks for this.  I don’t really know anything about the source material but it helps give some context. with Sun Mi and Son Oh Gong.  I like seeing characters grow so hoping that this happens with Son Oh Gong.

BLESS SOMEBODY AGREES WITH ME. I just think that they are both such powerhouses and would be really really fantastic together? Jun Ji Hyun and Lee Jong Suk have such a strong captivating presence on screen and I think that they would have really good chemistry too. I also wouldn’t mind if it was a kdrama like hello monster or 38 task force where romance isn’t the centre and there’s lots of plot and character development happening.

Right?? I’m rewatching the show already… I’m too obsessed. ^^;

I always thought he was going to die at the end of season one, and was continually confused when he remained alive each consecutive season. I was like “How can Merlin become the Merlin if Gaius is the Merlin?”

I love their teasing, too!
