Plant of the Day
Sunday 15 December 2019
The stems of the large, suckering, deciduous shrub Rhus typhina (stag's horn sumach, velvet sumac, vinegar tree, Virginian sumach) throw wonderful shadows on this path in the low winter sunshine. This North American species is dioecious (separate male and female plants) with clusters of yellow-green flowers and then on female plants there are dense crimson fruiting heads. The large pinnate leaves turn red and orange in autumn.
