Mansa Musa (Mansa meaning Sultan) was the ruler of Mali Empire in West Africa from 1312-1337 A.D. He is said to be one of the richest man in the world, ever. Mansa Musa, In 1324 took a journey of Hajj(pilgrimage to Mecca) with a caravan consisting of 60,000 men all wearing brocade and Persian Silk. He had camels laden with gold which he distributed generously along his travels. Mansa Musa was a pious and a generous man. On his travel he met Mamluk Sultan Al-Malik al-Nasir. During his stay at Cairo his generosity in distributing gold caused a rapid decline in the value of gold that took more than 12 years to recover. During his Hajj travels he gathered scholars and craftsmen to live in the Mali Empire. Mansa Musa commissioned an Andalusian architect and poet Abu Ishaq As Saheli, to design the great Timbuktu or Djinguereber Mosque in Timbuktu Mali. The mosque was completed in 1327. Mansa Musa also developed the University of Sankore where geometry and mathematics were taught along with religious sciences.
