hello my angel lorna, hope you are feeling okay <3 how about robert has been away for a week on business and surprises aaron by coming home a day early :)
It had been a week. An entire bloody week.
It was the longest they’d had to be apart since they’d gotten married again, neither of them ever needing to be away longer than a few days, three at the most, but the haulage conference in Rotterdam was too good an opportunity for Robert to pass up, and they’d gotten a deal to drive for a client to Antwerp the same week, so Robert had ended up doing a cross-European haulage week - a week Aaron had to miss out on, needed at the scrapyard, Liv in school.
He missed his husband, okay? Aaron missed his husband a lot. They worked together, lived together - they liked spending time together, and a week apart was a lot. Aaron was lonely, he was - he had friends and family, sure, but none of them were Robert, were they?
A week was too long to have an empty bed.
Sighing, Aaron set about finishing the last of his washing up, ready to head to bed.
He’d done the lock-up routine so many times now, he could do it in his sleep - checking the doors, switching off all the lights before he headed for the stairs. It was Friday night, Gerry out at some party in Hotten, Liv at Gabby’s.
Aaron was going through the motions, really, as he got ready for bed, pausing for a second before he got into bed on Robert’s side, wanting to feel as close to his husband as he could.
Maybe it was silly. Robert hadn’t slept in their bed in a week, but still, it helped.
He was mostly asleep when he heard the front door go, assuming Gerry or Liv had come home.
Until his bedroom door opened.
Aaron raised himself up on his elbows, squinting in the darkness. “Robert?” he asked, voice hoarse. Checking his phone, Aaron realised it had been a good two hours since he’d gone to bed, clearly having been drifting in and out of consciousness since he’d curled up in bed.
He reached out and turned on one of their bedside lamps, revealing Robert. His husband looked dog-tired, wearing a crumpled jumper, the dark circles under his eyes practically black.
“Sorry, did I wake you?” Robert said apologetically, already toeing off his shoes, pulling off his jumper.
“S’ok,” Aaron shook his head. “You’re not supposed to be home until tomorrow.”
“I know,” Robert said, down to his boxers now, sliding into bed behind Aaron, pressing his face into Aaron’s t-shirt clad shoulder. “I missed you, I wanted to come home.”
Aaron couldn’t help but smile sleepily as he turned the lamp back off, happily nestled in his husbands arms again - exactly where he was supposed to be. “I missed you too.”
