Vagueing over here about stuff out there, far as hell from tumblr — a different form of credentialism that sets my teeth on edge: naming dropping lineages of mentorship with a certain tone of voice.
The person who make that smug face and says, “I studied under/mentored under [BIG NAME] who was mentored by [BIGGER NAME] who learned under [LITERALLY SO FAMOUS OF A NAME THAT PPL OUTSIDE THE FIELD CERTAINLY KNOW THIS NAME]”
Half the time they never mention that it was all for 3 hot minutes they were doing some week professional workshop under BIG NAME 1 and they were just yet another person out of a few dozen with a clip-on name tag.
As for the other half of the time, a notable percentage fail to mention that all of the time that the mentor dedicated to them over the course of X months or a few years hardly fills up a coffee cup.
Up there with the 32 year old wearing a Harvard sweatshirt whenever they go to a casual meet-up.
