Subtext is an amazing thing in romance (and any genre really) and depending on how something is written (or delivered in film/tv) the subtext can be so much more than the simple moment of the scene.
For example, in e7 after the wedding scene where Colin says “she will find you, eventually” the subtext of the next unspoken part of that line is “and she will take you from me”

...just occured to me that what a normal person would have said is, ‘Put as much text into that subtext as you possibly can’? Because, uhm, that’s what makes sense? What does ‘Put as much sub into that text as you possibly can’ even mean? Unless you’re Dean and bottoming for Cas is literally all you think about all the time, that is.

One of the great joys of the original is watching it knowing that William Wyler and Gore Vidal instructed the actor playing Messala to behave as though he and Ben Hur were former lovers. And to never, ever, let Charlton Heston find out about that particular backstory note.
