Your addiction slides into the seat next to you in class today. He looks stunning and makes your ribs ache as your lungs melt through their cage. No one else even looks up, but you feel every inhale as he creeps his fingers over to your notebook. He takes it before you can stop him, so your heart stops instead. His handwriting is rushed; the letters knock into each other like Monday morning traffic, vowels and constants arguing over who’s more vital to the message. Your hand tremors as he slides the double pronged promise back in front of you. It whispers “let’s get numb together.” Your eyes dart up to see if he means it, but all you find is his absence. You want to be able to breathe again, keep telling yourself you miss the way air tastes, but you’ve grown so accustomed to the way he makes love hurt, you no longer call it suffocating. You grab your bag and secrets, and let the door shut itself behind you. He’s waiting for you outside, and for a split second, Mama’s warnings fly across your mind. They are drowned out by all the memories you and him could make together, so you tie your reasons and rationality to the flag pole, salute the way he makes your veins burn, and take his hand in yours. And the two of you, eyes burning in the evening sun, casually stroll toward your next best mistake.
