Steven: I am a child. What’s your excuse?

“Well, Steven, we were all talking, and...and...”

“...And...what is that smell?”

“Fish corpses.”

“Fish corpses?”

“Fish corpses.”

“Fish corpses.”

“Why are there fish corpses?”

“Why wouldn’t there be fish corpses?”

“...Anyways, regardless of your weird Earth customs--”

“No, no, Yellow, I think I know what this is!  The Earth apes perform a ritual called ‘cooking’!  Is this cooking, Steven?  May I have a fish corpse?”

...You know, I was going to complain that this seems like a bit of a sudden turnaround from the Diamonds about who they want to take home with them, but it’s...actually not!  They’ve begged Steven to stay on Homeworld, and he said no, and while they clearly missed why, they’re also clearly not forcing him to leave Earth.  Hence, they decided to come to Earth themselves (again: they missed why Steven was so desperate to go home).

But when they got here, their immediate reaction was “oh I hate this actually”.

So...they’re not going to force Steven to leave, and they’re not going to stay.  Spinel is, as Blue said, very reminiscent of their memories of Pink, and the three of them are just.  So.  Bored.  without Steven around, so...snap decision: let’s take the goofball home, and beg Steven to visit later, if the guilt trip doesn’t work by itself.

Okay, that’s unexpected!  Not only was I not expecting “Here we are in the future” to be the new intro, I was not expecting the Diamonds to show up in this part.

Notable tidbits:  Bismuth, Lapis, and Peridot have been added to the core group, obviously.  The Off-Colors have graduated to the opening, though so have a handful of corrupted Gems.  Lars is here, but not Sadie.  Steven’s shirt now actually contrasts his jacket, so it’s not eye-searing pastel on pastel, and he’s wearing a shirt that’s identical to the ones Greg was selling when he tried to play Beach City and had only Rose for an audience.

And, to my absolute delight,

Spinel!

Now, she’s very small in this shot, so the eyeliner may just have been left off to not muddle the shot, but she’s still got the rest of her movie design, including the upside-down gem.  I hope Stiles voicing her doesn’t keep her constantly out of the show, but I understand why she wouldn’t be around much anyways.
