Elements of Buddhist architecture
A stupa, derived from the Sanskrit word meaning "heap," is a structure resembling a mound or hemisphere. It serves as a location for meditation and houses relics, often the remains of Buddhist monks or nuns, known as śarīra. Another associated architectural term is chaitya, referring to a prayer hall or temple that incorporates a stupa.
In Tibetan, a stupa is known as a chorten.
