Free, fri & gratis - Common mistake in Swedish

I'd like to make a quick post about a mistake I often see English speakers make when learning Swedish!

In English, I can think of two ways to use the word free:

1. Not held in captivity

2. Something without cost

In Swedish, these two definitions have their two own words: (1) fri and (2) gratis.

However, I often see and hear English speakers depending solely on fri.

"Är den fri? Är bussbiljetten fri? Är vattnet fritt?"

However, fri only has the definition of "not being held in captivity" and is wrong to use in this case. When something is of no cost, use "gratis"! Many Swedes will probably understand though, as fri sounds a lot like free.

"Är den gratis? Är bussbiljetten gratis? Är vattnet gratis?" are the correct forms! :)
