My friend recently let us borrow Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros for the Nintendo Switch while he was writing his master’s thesis, but we had to give them back. So I decided to start Pokemon Quest (a free Nintendo Switch game) while waiting for my order of Mario Kart and Mario Party to come in the mail. But completely in German.
They (YouTube polyglots) say that if you are serious about learning a language, immersion is your friend. And if you don’t know something and it frustrates you, don’t give up and switch back to your native language; that is your opportunity to learn.
Fair point. Got it. Makes sense.
But DAMN videogame language is... different. Talks of adventures, gemstones, and attack values. Things that are not exactly relevant to regular daily life (at least not in social isolation). So even though I know most of the connecting words, I definitely did not understand the main nouns and verbs (i.e., the most important part)... And what I’m sure would take a native speaker less than 10 minutes to go through took me an hour and a half.
Part of this is because I was trying to be disciplined enough to translate word for word, then understand the sentence as a whole. As a means of grasping not just the words, but the word order. But it is hella frustrating. Especially because language is not as simple as “word for word”. Certain words I thought I knew showing up in different contexts means something completely different. Trying to wrap my brain around it frankly takes time.
Trying to embrace it, though. Because discomfort is what makes us grow. And since I figure the game will be less frustrating once I get past all the beginner tutorial stuff. Once I make it past this part, the rest won’t be as tedious.

日本語単語スピードマスター Review
Today I want to introduce you one of the best book/resource I have ever used in my life, which is the 日本語単語スピードマスター (Nihongo Tango Speed Master), I bought it on Amazon Japan for 17,64€ (shipping included) and arrived in 3 days in perfect conditions!
The book is really nice, it has the perfect format for being read everywhere, in fact I mainly use it while going to work! My version, which is the basic one with 1800 words, has 50 chapters and each has a different topic. Every word has one or two examples and the red card that you put over the page helps you with memorizing readings and sentences.
PROs:
lots of useful words and effective examples that show you the context in which the word is used
simple to use
effective study method for me
you can bring it everywhere
translations in english, korean and chinese
CONs:
too many words in one single page, it may confuse you
has no exercises
the purchase can be expensive in some countries
PERSONAL TIPS:
combine this book with a notebook in which you write your own examples
revise things every day, it doesn’t take too much time
try to associate the words you read with things you see around you (ex. family and house vocab when you’re at home while having lunch or just relaxing watching tv)
MARK: 9/10, I just love this book, it is helping so much with my weakness!
