The fear of the unknown is one that I think effects most ex religious people at some point in their lives. I have definitely experienced it.

In the baptist tradition, everything seems so sure. You know The Truth about life, death, the beginning of time, and how it all will end. You know your purpose and you know you are guaranteed a good afterlife.

So leaving it means that suddenly everything isn’t so certain. Now you actually have to wonder, “what happens after I die?” and “what is the meaning of life?”. This can be extremely difficult to deal with, especially if you don’t have a good support network behind you- which most don’t.

As for how to deal with it, I can only really tell you what helped me. For me, it was very helpful to learn about life beyond the religion I was raised in. I was isolated from a lot growing up so learning about different perspectives on life from people of varying backgrounds (religious and non-religious) was really helpful. It helped me realize that with these sort of questions, everyone makes their own answers. Answering some of those questions for myself helped alleviate some of my worries, and accepting that nobody has all the answers took care of the rest.
