ok so I know s-town came out forever ago, but i’ve been re-listening to it and haven’t been able to get this song out of my head.
if you haven’t listened to s-town, you should. it’s an amazingly emotional podcast, however HUGE suicide tw
I need podcast recommendations
I have an hour commute to and from work and the McElroys just don’t put out enough content.
I love McElroy based comedy podcasts like My Brother, My Brother, and Me, Adventure Zone, Wonderful, etc.
I also love true crime like Up and Vanished, Serial, S-Town, Dirty John, etc.
Any recommendations please?
Some creepy/scary podcast recommendations:
Dirty John I just finished this one. Very short, wraps up nicely, VERY good. Entertaining and creepy. About a woman who marries a man that is not who he says he is.
Haunted Places This one is new so there’s very few episodes, but it’s really good! It’s a story time podcast about creepy stories/places, with some nice role-playing sound effects and perspective (so you feel like you’re there). The stories are fairly basic, you could read a lot of this stuff on Wikipedia, but the way they’re told makes it very entertaining. I just started this one as well.
S-Town AKA Shit Town. Literally just started the first few minutes of this one! But I can already tell I’m going to love it. I don’t know much about it other than it’s by the same people who did Serial (ruler of podcasts), and it’s about a rural town with a lot of bad seedy underbelly stuff happening. Edit: I’ve heard a few episodes now, and although it’s still very good and mysterious, it’s very sad and depressing and I think it’s gonna be more about the guy John and the stuff he wanted the narrator to understand.
True Murder This one is one of my faves. It feels a lot like late night AM radio (poor production, and sometimes awkward interviews), but it’s SO THOROUGH. The host is very good at asking his guests the right questions, he seems very knowledgeable about the cases he features. Basically, if you’ve always wanted to read the true crime books you see littering the sale rack at your local book store but you don’t really have the time, this is the podcast for you. VERY detailed. Stuff you won’t read online unless you’re digging. I also don’t think you’ll ever run out of episodes...
Serial I think just about everyone who wants to listen to this podcast has done it already, but I have to list it because anyone who hasn’t, YOU MUST. It is SOOOO good, I actually listened to it twice and it was just as enjoyable the second time around. About whether or not a boy really committed the teenagehood murder he’s currently in prison for. This case has been big in the news, with the Innocence Project. It stirred up a lot of outrage and a newfound careful look into police investigation and the criminal system (which is totally fucked btw). Very similar approach as Making a Murderer and American Vandal (both of which are very good, def recommend watching those, American Vandal is funny but ends on a surprisingly thought provoking note). Look at this pic of me in front of the Innocence Project door at UVA. They were actively working on that case while we lived there. ;) I geeked.
Black Tapes This one is fun. You have to suspend disbelief a bit, but it’s a lot of fun. It’s about a girl who’s investigating some weird occurrences involving suicide, otherworldly music, urban legends, etc, and how they all connect. They took a long break and I haven’t checked back to see if they’ve started up again yet, but I hope they have/will soon. If you like X-Files, you might like this. I was really intrigued by her sleep diaries.
Please let me know if you have any recommendations for me!! I love creepy/scary/weird podcasts. It’s definitely the bulk of what I listen to when I listen to podcasts...
(Obviously **trigger warnings** for murder, spooky stuff, violence, gore, abuse, depression, mental illness, suicide, death, etc. Not all of them have that, but if you’re sensitive to that definitely stay away from True Murder, that shit is real life true crime, not exaggerated or flowery. It can become a bit much to listen to after a while, so I usually take long breaks before picking it back up again).
A Little Sugar in His Tank
Mr. Mojo has been listening to Shit Town, and one character describes another as having a little sugar in his tank -- meaning a wee bit gay -- and I LOVE that. What a lovely phrase. Why aren’t we all using it?

Those of you who have listened to the amazing S-Town podcast may not know what John B. was a member of our parent organization, the National Association of Watch & Clock Collectors. In 1999, John B. placed this advertisement in one of our publications. We thought we would share this with all the S-Town fans out there who have come to know John B.
just finished this podcast and...it hit me very hard. i think everyone needs to hear this man's story.
A friend of mine recommended the podcast “S Town” to me. Now I’m sitting here wondering if Alabama is for real.
