Autumn leaves in Abbey Gardens and the Guildhall, Winchester 30/10/2025
It was nice to see Magpies, a nice trio of bumble bee, stinking iris berries and wood avens on a walk up St. Giles Hill taking in stunning views over Winchester in all its autumnal colourful splendour and hear Carrion Crow across a few places today.

In a shaded urban landscape by a carpark were these clumps of Iris foetidissima (stinking iris, gladden, gladwyn, roast beef plant, scarlet-seeded iris, stinking gladwin). In winter this evergreen perennial has large pods which open to reveal bright orange-red seeds. The leaves can look rather tatty but the seeds persist through the winter providing a display.

We have many stinking irises in our garden-they are very hardy and will survive almost anything including very vigorous hack backs by myself! They are so prevalent that I sometimes forget how pretty the flowers are and how striking the seeds and seedpods too…..
