Super effective plot twist #2: Cassia’s illness is still present, just halted somewhat by the extensive cybernetics. She ain’t getting any better. These pages are so dynamic; you really feel the desperation in Clove and how she’s coming to regret joining Eggman for help for her sister, the former literally revelling in taunting her of how hopeless they both are in the situation. It truly makes Cassia and Clove sympathetic, the former for the state she is in and the latter for what she goes through to look out for her sister.

The use of colour is also fantastic. I’ve groaned Gabriel Cassata’s name a lot under my breath from here to Worlds Unite, but the hues of red dominating the entirety of Clove’s room when Eggman is on the call make for some very tense pages. The panel of Clove gripping her chair in silent, trembling anger as Eggman mocks how dire Cassia was before is very impactful, as is the last panel of the screen switching off, bathing the room in a shade of blue as Clove accepts that there ain’t no going back.

Man, Nephthys the Vulture is so cool?? She’s one of the few older Mobian character but she’s got this really cool (and expressive) mask and instead of wings to fly, she just soars with her super-cool cape which spreads out like such, her abilities no doubt granted by the Cyberization process one gets from being in the Egg Army. She’s also got morals, believing that one should simply give in to the dictator as that would mean less casualties on the long run, which totally clashes with Sonic’s heroics and gives the two a really epic-looking fight scene of not just intense action but also conflicting allignments. The Sonic/Nephthys conflict is really well done! I’m glad Flynn and ABT came together to give us cool concepts like this!

Of course, Sonic is still Sonic, despite fighting such a morally grey villain.

Damn, after what the two went through, they’re reminded that they’re still on opposite ends of the war. But Cassia still makes sure Bunnie gets out safe by stopping a soldier from shooting at her. What a touching moment with these characters! The quick pained expression and the quick cover up of laughter is what gets me the most. Bunnie is totally unaware and at this point only remembers Cassia’s betrayal earlier, its so heart wrenching!

I just truly adore these characters written under Aleah Baker. She gave the characters such nuance and even shows us how the good guys cope with having to fight Egg Army peeps who aren’t inherently evil; they just joined the villain’s side because they had nowhere else to go.

From what we know, this was the set-up for an ongoing story involving most of these girls and Cassia’s growing illness, and Lupe and the Wolf Pack were also gonna be involved. -Sigh- It would have been great.

Time for the second half of the...Shamar two-parter? Face of the Enemy arc?

Plot twist #1! The Freedom Fighters of that region are actually in cahoots with the Egg Army chapter! Its not for any napherious purposes; its to keep a stable ballance of power between the two so that nobody in Shamar gets hurt, with their boss completely unaware that the eternal stalemate is done on purpose. Its actually a really cool idea that I wish we got to see more of!
