Day 6 - Troma and Jig from Stealth Symphony.
I’ve decided not to care (as much) that I’m lagging behind by a day. I’ll still label them by the day they were supposed to be, just now I won’t be rush to catch up. Hopefully that means the art will look better now...
Anyways, its Stealth Symphony. Narita’s ill-fated manga. It had a lot of potential and love put into it (just read the chapter notes and see how much Narita thought out), however it seems like being in the Weekly Shounen Jump was not a good fit. While the manga industry is known for being cut-throat, Jump is probably the most competitive. If a series can’t maintain popularity consistently, no matter how much potential it has, it will be axed. Such a shame because there are quite a few manga I liked from Jump that had so much potential but was canceled just because they couldn’t top the rankings...
It would have been nice to see how Troma would have grew, but alas.
I’ve tried to find the volumes to buy, but it just seems too old that they are unavailable. So sad.
On this episode of Manga Mavericks, while Lum is away, Colton (despite the undisclosed amount of food he had during Thanksgiving) manages to record with good friend and frequent contributor, Maxy Barnard, as they both take a look at Ryohgo Narita & Yoichi Amano’s Stealth Symphony, as apart of their ongoing series of canceled Shonen Jump manga podcasts!
Colton is floored by some of Narita’s twists and curveballs revealed in the back half of the story, while Maxy struggles to figure out whether one mediocre story arc determines his overall enjoyment of the series or not, just as it may have with readers back in the day. Stealth Symphony is quite the wild ride, so Colton and Maxy talk about everything they can about what might be the densest, short-lived Jump manga ever made! Enjoy!

It’s been awhile since I thought about Stealth Symphony ( a manga that Narita wrote) and even longer since I read it, but I am honestly sad it was cancelled since I did like the premise, and it had nice art and some interesting characters from what I remember (like...Troma, I think his name was?).
Cancellations make shoddy endings. Still, I think maybe it’s time I go back and reread it.Â
I read Stealth Symphony again, this time with all those comments... Well, I should realize that it’s Ryougo Narita if I read the comments from the start... OTL (All of the series that I know for not having a clear protag are his stuff)
One funny thing is he said Jig is not the protagonist, but the guys from Jump already put him in the cover instead of Toruma so most of the reader think that Jig is the protagonist. My question is, how did he expect for Toruma to be the focus in cover illust? I mean, he’s invisible? Maybe a wet Toruma? But that will make him looks more like a slime-man than invisible man. :(
But in the end Jig actually fills the role Narita-sensei set for him and the protag seat is handed back to Toruma. I hope there will be a sequel... preferably in LN format so sensei can make a mess as much as he want without thinking the page limitation. (In this manga, he was like “It’s supposed to be a sentence if it’s were LN but it ended up as two-page illustration in manga” lol)
