Julian, the reluctant heir of Lettenhove, completes his duties well. His people are safe, fed, and educated. He and his counsel have also been working to rewrite the prejudiced laws regarding non-humans.
While Julian was satisfied with the results of his efforts, he wouldnât say he enjoyed politics. No, he got his daily dose of enjoyment from indulging in hobbies: music, writing, and collecting art.
Most recently, he acquired an incredible marble statue. The subject was a humongous, long-haired man wielding a long sword. The detail was incredible, and the eyes were painted black with veins sprawling over the rest of the face.
It was titled: âThe Witcherâ
Julian was immediately captivated by the statue. Heâd bought it and placed it in his atrium the same day. The statue reignited the whispers about Julianâs eccentricities, but he didnât care. Hours were spent staring at the statue, writing poems about it, and talking to it. Yes, he knew the statue wasnât technically a person; however, it helped Julian organize his thoughts to speak them aloud.
One night, an assassin slipped into Julianâs castle. They killed his personal guard and eventually cornered him in his atrium. When Julian closed his eyes, bracing himself for the killing blow, there was a noise like a landslide.
Upon opening his eyes, Julian stared at the back of a figure clothed in black armor with hair as white as marble.

Jaskier looked just as beautiful as he did any other day, carved out in unforgiving grey marble, his eyes pupil-less and vacant. His body was perfectly formed, each muscle, hair, and fold of clothing was carved by a masterful hand. He was frozen forever like that and Geralt hated it. He hated the falseness of the stone grace. There was no trace of Jaskierâs usual charming, nearly perpetual wave of sound. There was no warm smile. No fluttering lashes. No gentle voice that soothed and provoked in equal measure; that teased and placated Geralt like some kind of conversational acrobat.Â
Nothing looked back at Geralt but a face made of cold, emotionless stone. It stared into the distance almost mockingly. Was Jaskier even in there anymore or had his soul been forfeited as well as his body? Sometimes the newly born human could hear that familiar dulcet voice at the back of his head, whispering: You did this to me. You made me this way. You tricked me, Geralt. You did! You!
The ex-demon was buried so deeply in his cloud of self-loathing that he didnât notice a dark-haired woman approaching. She bumped into his hip with her own, jostling him to the side and away from any listening ears.Â
âSorry,â he mumbled, stepping back a half-pace and even further from the gathered audience. She followed.Â
âYou visit often but you never look around,â the woman remarked, her own gaze equally fixed on the marble figure. âYou always choose to stand here, out of the way of the crowd but always within view of this particular statue. You keep your arms crossed and that same sad scowl on your face, staring for hours at this reclining demon carving. What is it about this statue that drives you to brood so violently?â
âHmm,â Geralt replied. Usually stoicism got him some peace and quiet.
The strange woman was not dissuaded; she continued to talk, almost as if she was carrying on the conversation with only herself as a partner: âHe reminds me of someone. An old museum employee, actually, who mysteriously disappeared one night and never returned. Not even to pick up his last paycheck, although that went missing, too. Gone right out of the mailbox without a solitary flicker of an image on the security camera. Do you know anything about that, Broody Bunch?â
âNo,â he muttered. âWhy are you talking to me?â
The woman gave a slow, quiet half-smile. âSo you used to be a demon, huh? That used to be you up there?â
Geraltâs head snapped to the side. âExcuse me?â
âYou heard me, Punky Broodster,â the woman smirked, looking him in the eyes now. âYou were the demon from before, werenât you? You fell in love with him.â
âI just needed him to say the words to lift the curse,â he huffed. âNow, as repayment for his kindness, Iâm keeping him safe.â
âAdmit it, child of darkness. You can tell me if you miss him. You can whisper to me that you yearn to hear his voice and feel his touch, freely and without restraint or limitation. You donât feel like eating or sleeping even though youâve been dreaming of your potential human life for years. You barely take care of yourself because every moment that passes feels wrong without him in it. Admit it to me, demon, and I will take it as confession.â
âWhat are you?âÂ
The woman shrugged again, just as nonchalantly and noncommittally as before, âI am a representative of the Powers That Be.â
âAnd what do they want with a little ex-demon?â
âItâs not you that Iâm here to look after. Itâs him.â
âJaskier?â
âHe has a very important role to play,â she stated. âAnd now youâve gone and complicated things.â
âMy sincerest apologies,â Geralt grimaced. It was never good to upset the Powers That Be. He was about to go from one curse right into another. âI do love, him though. Youâre right. And I miss him more than words in any language can express, human or celestial.â
âGood. Then we can get on with it.â
âGet on with what?â
âIâm here to give you the secret to breaking the spell. Itâs going to make you laugh, I promise.â
âHmm?â
âTrue loveâs kiss. You smooch that statue on the lips,â she pointed, âAnd heâs all yours.â
âReally?â
âReally.â
âHmm.â
---
Geralt walked across the empty expanse of room; it had looked so much smaller when he was stuck to the pedestal. It seemed to take forever for him to reach the statue now. âIâm so sorry about all of this, Jaskier,â he mumbled as he drew close enough to touch. âIâm so incredibly sorry.â
He leaned forward, pressed his lips to the statueâs, and watched with bright eyes as the dreary grey of carved stone faded to the soft, warm pink of the young manâs skin. âG-Geralt?â
All the ex-demon could do was throw his arms around the humanâs slender waist and hold on for dear life. He buried his nose in Jaskierâs soft brown hair and breathed in deeply, so deeply that it pained his lungs to inhale any further. He released it all in a pent up sob, his hands fisting into the material of Jaskierâs scanty toga.Â
âIâm so sorry,â he repeated, over and over like a mantra. He knew he was undeserving. âIâm so sorry, Jaskier. I love you, too. I do. I love you.â
Jaskier was clinging back, crying in tandem and snuffling little hiccups against the side of Geraltâs neck. âI missed you. I saw you keeping an eye on me. I saw you. I knew youâd find a way to get me back.â
âThe Powers That Be have great things in store for you,â Geralt smiled. âThey couldnât let my stupidity put out that bright spark.â
âYouâre half that spark, now,â Jaskier sighed, cuddling closer. âNow take me home and get me some pants, this is awful.â
shout-out to @thecomfortofoldstorriesâ for tossing ideas back and forth with me until this came out.
tw: yeah itâs pretty horny fam
idea based on this incredibly hot statue of Lucifer:
---
âWell thatâs certainly an unusually sexy carving of the Devil, now isnât it?â Jaskier laughed. The museum director, a severe woman only a few years older than him, nodded and gave a small smile. Her name tag read Museum Director: Yennefer V.Â
âThis statue is part of our special Angels and Demons collection. Heâs a permanent fixture of our establishment and not a piece on loan, so please make sure to bring the tours through here as often as possible,â she instructed. Jaskier jotted that detail down onto his notepad. âLucifer is a favorite of ours and Iâm sure youâll see a handful of our younger, female interns swooning over him at any given time. Now, moving on this way.â
The newly hired curator for the statuary portion of the museum followed Yennefer into the next room. but his mind stayed stuck on the mussed stone curls and the manacled marble ankle of the handsome Lucifer. He seemed almost too lifelike to be made of stone.Â
Almost, Jaskier thought, jotting down more notes as Yennefer droned on about maintenance schedules and alarm systems, but not quite.
---
âFuck!â Jaskier cried as he tripped. He fell sideways, slamming into the rope barrier of the Lucifer statue and catching his hand on the sharp edge of one golden clasp. A line of bright red bloomed across the back of his knuckle and he shook his hand on instinct to ease the pain. A few drops of blood flew off; one landed directly on the base of Luciferâs pedestal. Jaskier licked the wound clean and grumbled, âOh, shit. I have to clean that up.â
The curator turned to look for a towel or a dust rag or something that could be used to wipe up his little biohazardous mistake and took a few steps away from Lucifer. When he finally located a paper towel and turned to wipe the smear away he nearly passed out.Â
Sitting where the statue had been only moments before was a living human person. Well...not human. Not if the two enormous, black leathery wings fluttering gently behind this stranger were real anyway.Â
âWhat the fuck?â he breathed incredulously. âIs this a prank? Am I being punked?â
The statue-person had long white hair that fell in gentle waves to the tops of his shoulders. He had the gold crown and wooden scepter still clutched in his hand and his ankle, now flesh instead of marble, was attached to the base of the statue by a strong steel manacle. The statue-person shifted and the chain jingled quietly, breaking the otherwise fraught silence.Â
The statue glanced up and cocked its head to the side. âWhere-?â
âUhm...yes, uh. Hello there, Mr. Lucifer, Sir. I am uh...Jaskier. Iâm the night curator at the museum. Iâm working on classifying some ancient Roman statuary and organizing an exhibit in a few months. Hello,â the nervous young doctor bowed. âMy apologies for the uh...accommodations.â
âYou bled for me?â Lucifer blinked owlishly.
âUnintentionally, yes. Oh god, am I going to hell? Am I going to go to hell now because I bled on the weirdly sensual statue of Satan at work!?â Jaskier was close to hyperventilating. The statue-person was watching him with curious yellow eyes. His pupils were slit like a catâs. âPlease tell me Iâm not going to hell.â
âGeralt.â
âWh-What?â
âIâm not Lucifer,â the statue reiterated. âIâm Geralt.â
âOh. Well theyâve been selling you back and forth between churches for years thinking you were just an incredibly delicious-looking statue of Satan,â Jaskier rambled. His eyes widened and he clapped his hands over his mouth when he realized what heâd said. Geralt, as he was apparently called, was smirking from atop his pedestal.
âI can smell you from here,â the demon (was he a demon?) stated. âNo use trying to hide it. I can tell that youâre attracted to me.â
âWell yes. Youâre very...attractive,â the curator muttered lamely. There was no excuse; this was a fever dream, anyway.
âThank you.â
âMhm. Well, Iâm clearly on drugs or lying in a pool of my own blood hallucinating my mortal end because this cannot be happening for real.â
âWell believe me, Jaskier,â Geralt practically purred from his seat across the room. âIt is definitely happening. It is definitely real.â
âNo. No, thank you.â
âCome here,â the demon ordered, flicking a few of his fingers in a come hither movement. Jaskier crossed the floor against his own will to stand before the mostly naked and very muscular previously-stone man. âTouch me.â
Jaskierâs hand went straight for his pectoral. The statue smirked again, more confidently this time, and placed his warm hand over the panicking curatorâs.Â
âCalm down, little human. Youâre going to pass out if you keep breathing that fast.â
âI- but this- but you canât-â
Jaskierâs eyes rolled back into his head and he dropped to the floor, still bleeding lightly from his hand. Geralt sighed and rearranged his clothes a little to make them sit more comfortably against his skin. The sun would be rising soon and he would return to carved marble as the curse demanded. Hopefully the clumsy mortal boy would spill his blood here again so they could talk some more; Jaskier was as interesting as he was a danger to himself.Â
The demon, for that is exactly what he was, allowed himself to observe the human as he lay, prone and stupid, on the floor before him. His face was peaceful and soft. Cute, the demon decided. He looks innocent and sweet and positively cute.
He focused hard and tried his best to slip his way into Jaskierâs dreams.
I havenât forgotten about this story, I promise!Â

tw: blood, injury, panicked Geralt
Geralt watched, horrified and unable to move, as the apparent thief snuck up behind Jaskier with an odd metal bar held over his head. The young curator only caught a glimpse of his attacker out of the corner of his eye before the bar came crashing down against the top of his skull. He crumpled, the side of his head connecting yet again with the stone edge of Geraltâs podium.
The wed thud terrified the frozen demon, but the blood pouring from Jaskierâs wounds freed him from the spell. He burst to life, snarling and screaming at the thief. He cursed and spat, yanking violently against the chains that kept him held back against the statueâs base.Â
âLeave!â he demanded, his voice low and terrifying, âLeave now if you value your life!â
The masked stranger shrieked and bolted from the room, no longer interested in looting Jaskierâs desk or pulling paintings off the wall.
Geralt fell to his knees as soon as the scent of the stranger faded to nothingness, cradling Jaskierâs head in his hand. He pulled the curator into a limp sitting position against his chest, kissing along the cut on his head to close it. Heâd never felt such all-consuming panic before.Â
Heâd never felt so utterly human.Â
So helpless. So small. So alone.Â
He didnât know what else he could do to help. He couldnât reach the phone, chained as he was, and even if heâd been able to reach it he didnât know which set of numbers would summon aid. All he could do was hold the younger man close to his chest and hum softly into the top of his hair. Heâd healed what he could with what little power he still had, but there wasnât much to do now but wait.
The demon tried to convince himself that he was only worried about Jaskierâs safety for his own sake. If the giddy curator wasnât there to wake him up and fall in love with him, if Jaskier wasnât there to say the magic words and switch places with him, then Geralt would lose what was likely his last opportunity at freedom.Â
But he knew, deep down, somewhere he was afraid to acknowledge, that he wasnât doing this for himself at all. His heart wasnât racing frantically because he feared the loss of his future. His eyes werenât misty because he wanted freedom from the curse. His hands werenât smoothing up and down the warm skin of Jaskierâs forearms as he prayed for the boy to live because he was a selfish demon.
No, he was doing those things because he was genuinely concerned about the young humanâs well-being.
And wasnât that a terrifying thought?
The mortalâs fragile body stirred in his arms and a pair of blue eyes blinked up at him groggily. âG-Geralt?âÂ
âJaskier! Are you alright? How do you feel?â
âMy head hurts. What happened?â
âThief.â
âDid they get away with anything!?â the curator gasped. He tried to disentangle himself from Geralt to stand but the demon held firm, wrapping his leathery wings around them both like a cocoon. âGeralt, I have to go check on th-â
âHe hit you. You fell. You were wounded and it woke me up. I scared him away and I stopped the bleeding on your head, so you should be fine.â
âOh, goodness, Geralt, Iâm so sorry,â Jaskier struggled to sit up on his own but Geraltâs arms remained wrapped around his waist like bars of iron. âReally, Iâll be alright. You can let me up. I should probably check my desk and see if-â
âJust...let me hold you for a moment, please.â
Jaskier settled. An unfamiliar look clouded his eyes and he nodded, leaning himself comfortably against the demonâs chest and closing his eyes.
âAlright, love. But just for you, because you asked so nicely.â
---
Jaskier got to work eventually, filling out and filing a handful of important transfer documents before beginning to type up the pamphlets for a new exhibit on medieval tapestries.Â
âIâm glad youâre alright,â Geralt said, watching the sun begin to rise through the front window. âSee you soon.â
âSleep well, Geralt,â the curator smiled softly. âThank you for rescuing me. You really are my hero.â
And if Geralt ran those words through his mind over and over for the following twelve hours as he waited for the mortalâs next shift to start, then nobody had to know except him.Â
Oh no, Geralt is having some second and possibly third thoughts about his original plan. How odd.

---
âI brought you seven different drinks,â Jaskier explained. He was trying to fish a band-aid out of his pocket and talk to Geralt at the same time and things werenât going well.
âGive it here, mortal,â the demon demanded, gesturing for the curator to show him the injury. Jaskier slowly relinquished the tip of his bloody thumb and watched as Geralt kissed the wound closed again. If that was how he was going to treat all of Jaskierâs âgood morning, itâs time to break the weird blood sacrifice based curseâ wounds then, well...maybe next time heâd try a little nick on the flat of his palm instead. And maybe make it a little bigger than was necessary. For the drama of it all, if nothing else (definitely not anything else...like feelings).
Stay focused, Jaskier reminded himself. He shook his head to clear it and pulled his hand back to give Geralt one of the many cups heâd carried into the museum with him. âThis is my favorite so thatâs what youâre trying first. Itâs a latte, plain and simple.â
âHmm. Coffee and milk, right?â
âYes. And exactly what I need to stay up for these night shifts. Sometimes people like to add flavoring; Iâm partial to a good hazelnut or maybe some caramel should the mood strike me. Vanilla is for posers and pumpkin spice is fine but not my cup of coffee, ya dig?â
Geralt took a slow sip of the warm drink and smiled. âItâs very good. I, uh, I dig.â
âAlright, mocha next!â
---
âOh gods, is this what chocolate has become? Fucking Hells,â Geralt drained the entire cup with a few huge gulps and laughed delightedly when he was finished. âYou humans are pretty amazing.â
The demon didnât miss Jaskierâs blush. Or the way he slowly pulled his bangs out of his eyes and adjusted his posture to seem more confident. âI practice, personally.â
âYou practice being amazing?â
âYes. Otherwise Iâll lose touch and then who will bring you coffee at night or sing horrible One Direction covers while youâre trapped as an unmoving stone, victim to my evil unmerciful whims.â
âIs One Direction the one that goes -â and Geralt hummed a bit of the song Jask sang most often while he organized paperwork and school trip request forms. Jaskier smiled and nodded.
âThatâs what makes you beautiful,â he said, winking for good measure. Geralt found it odd and perplexing that he had flushed in response to the mortal boyâs flirting. He found it even more frustrating and odd that the boy noticed and then teased him about it. âHa! Finally I got you back for all the blushing youâve made me do last time! That will teach you to make fun of me, Geralt!â
âGo do your paperwork,â the grumpy demon huffed over the top of his hazelnut/toasted marshmallow Frappuccino. âAnd let me enjoy my first treat in nearly five hundred years.â
âThatâs a long time to be alone without One Direction or Starbucks.â
Geralt looked up to make a joke in reply but the sad, apologetic look that shone in Jaskierâs soft blue eyes made him pause. He cares, the angel on Geraltâs shoulder reminded him, having suddenly returned from whatever vacation heâd been on last time. He wants you to be happy. He brought you a treat and tried to make you laugh. He is no ordinary mortal; he is Good.
âFuck.â
âWhatâs wrong, Geralt?âÂ
Fuck! He hated how happy the sound of his name in Jaskierâs mouth made him feel. It was sweeter than the chocolate-laced coffee drink. It was sweeter than all the confectionaries of Heaven. It was even sweeter than the angelic choir that sang the Lord to sleep at night. The sound of his name resting on the gentle pink slope of Jaskierâs lips had Geralt nearly in ecstasy. He blinked twice and looked up through his eyelashes at the human, whose heart palpitated in his chest, âNothingâs wrong, Jask. Just really like this drink.â
The smile Jaskier gave him lit up his heart yet again. âIâll remember that for next time.â

Geralt blinked awake unexpectedly. He hadnât been paying attention and therefore hadnât seen Jaskier approach.Â
âHello?â the curator practically sang, waving his hand in front of the demonâs sensitive eyes. âYou awake in there?â
âHmm.â
âOh, good. I have questions.â
âHmm.â
âVery eloquent tonight, I see, Geralt. Charming, as usual.â
âDid you summon me...intentionally?â
âYes. And Iâm sure it wonât be the last time, either. Now, like I said, I have some questions for you, if you donât mind.â
âYou bled for me,â the statue murmured. The statueâs only untethered hand reached out to grasp Jaskierâs. Geralt brought it to his mouth and pressed a burning, slow kiss to the scabbed tip of the humanâs finger. When Jaskier pulled it away, mesmerized and blushing wildly, the wound was closed completely. Only a thin line remained where heâd pricked himself with the letter opener from his desk. âI will gladly answer your questions, Jaskier.â
Geralt heard Jaskierâs heart stutter when he said the mortalâs name and couldnât help but smirk. Perfect.Â
âSo, I was wondering, whatâs...whatâs your favorite color? I mean youâve been alive for centuries and youâve been in some of the most impressive churches and museums in the world, right? So what painting is your favorite? Whatâs your favorite color? Why do you like it so much?â
Geralt blinked. That...that wasnât the line of questioning heâd been expecting at all. He thought Jaskier would be like the rest, curious about the afterlife. Hungry for power. Hungry for forbidden and cursed knowledge. Not - Not a demon statueâs favorite color. He frowned a little, confused as to how he should answer. Jaskier turned back to his desk and began to sort some papers, humming an unfamiliar tune very quietly as he did so.
âHmm?â
âTake your time to answer; I woke you up first-thing after I clocked in. I figured you needed to sort through a lifetime of experience, so I planned to give you a minute to think it over. We have all night to talk, Geralt. I didnât mean to be overwhelming and I apologize if that was too many questions at once.â
âYou woke me up first-thing?â Geralt asked, feeling dumb for the first time in a millennia. He ignored the rest of the curatorâs monologue, focusing only on that one detail. We have all night. Heâd given Geralt all night to speak and observe and be alive.Â
âOf course!â The bright-eyed mortal turned to face him. âI wouldnât want to miss a solitary minute of your company! If you ever donât want me to wake you up again, let me know. Otherwise I rather intended to keep you company on a regular basis.â
âOhâŠâ
Hmm. Fuck. The only decent human being in a fucking century and I manage to befriend him of all people. Goddamnit.Â
âBlue. My favorite color is probably blue, like water.â
Water, and definitely not the shade of your accursedly bright irises.
âExcellent,â Jaskier beamed. âMine is green, but yellow is a close second. Iâm a sucker for a Van Gogh; his yellows are inspired.â
âThe style is fascinating but Iâm partial to a Monet,â Geralt argued, smiling softly. More softly than heâd intended. More softly than his planned seduction called for. Donât lose your touch, now. You can get out of here. You can be free.Â
âSo, is there any way to break your curse? Do your chains have a key?â
âYes and no,â Geralt lied.
âAlright, shoot.â Jaskierâs arms were crossed over his chest and his butt was pressing against the edge of the desk as he leaned back against it. He looked adorable and so intent. Curious but not greedy.Â
âWould you believe me if I told you that Heaven and Hell invented True Loveâs Kiss?â
âI might.â
âWell you should. The only way to be free of the curse is true loveâs kiss. Second, no. These chains are meant to keep me from leaving the pedestal.â
âToo bad,â Jaskier sighed. âIâd hoped to show you around the rest of the museum. Maybe take you for coffee.â
âCoffee?â
âYeah. Can you like...eat and drink?â
âIt will disappear when I turn to stone.âÂ
âIâll bring you some coffee tomorrow, then.â
Geralt felt something strange knock loose in his chest. Something warm and soft that seemed determined to bloom and spread as he watched Jaskier finish sorting his papers. It had reached his fingers and toes by the time they finished discussing impressionism and moved on to Jaskierâs favorite books and Geraltâs favorite eras of history.Â
âThe Renaissance really was lovely,â he insisted. âBut I wasnât necessarily on board for the entire Enlightenment process. The art wasnât nearly as good.â
âJurassic Park is a fucking classic,â Jaskier explained a few long and interesting minutes later, âJeff Goldblum is one fine piece of Daddy.â
Geralt didnât need many context clues to understand what that meant.Â
The night passed happily and before it seemed entirely possible, that gut-sinking feeling appeared once again. âFuck. See you tomorrow night, Jaskier.â
âTalk to you tomorrow, Geralt,â the curator tucked a stray white hair back behind the statueâs ear and smiled softly. âIâll miss you in the meantime.â
Will you? Geralt wanted to ask, honestly curious about the answer. Something odd was happening. Something that was veering him far from the course of his original plan. Will you miss me? Will you think of me in the daylight hours and wish I was there with you? Will I be wishing to be with you? Do I hunger for the sun again, Jaskier?Â
Geralt steeled himself and let the stone take him over completely. He had to free himself. Lying about the kiss was the first and easiest step.Â
The rest, he realized with a strange and nearly alien twinge of guilt, would be harder.
â((I promise Iâm not horny for geralt of rivia Iâm, a lesbian who has chronic art block,, anyway love ur writing keep up the great work!!)â - OPÂ
Bounceyâs Addition: Holy cow. This is amazing. This is absolutely fantastic. I am actually crying real tears of joy. Thank you for making this beautiful piece! Iâm definitely going to post more of this soon!
