Chakotay is a really terrible first officer. usually I’m criticizing him for being such a yes man and rarely offering alternative options but I just watched the season 3 finale/season 4 premiere and it has revealed that on the rare occasion he does disagree with Captain Janeway it’s a whole fight and he turns against her orders at the first opportunity.
In Star Trek the Motion Picture Commander Decker said it is his duty as First Officer to offer alternatives and ideas and Kirk immediately agrees. Watching that movie while also watching Voyager really solidified my opinion thay Chakotay is simply bad at his job.
Honestly I don’t even think he’s a bad character I just think he really falls short at a crucial part of his job. Luckily the rest of the bridge crew and Janeway’s wits make up for this
