More ramblings about troubleshooting STARTTLS negotiation with openssl
As of late, I've been spending time troubleshooting STARTTLS negotiation issues over SMTP. It's an interesting service extension and if you're REALLLLY curious about it, feel free to check out the RFC here.
Along the way, I've learned a couple interesting openssl s_client switches and wanted to share. Here's my new "go to" command for troubleshooting:
openssl s_client -cert <path to tls cert> -connect <remote mail server fqdn or ip>:25 -starttls smtp -state -msg | tee <log file path>

Just as important (potentially more so), but often overlooked, is to ensure that your email server is also secure.

Is STARTTLS more safe than TLS/SSL?
In Thunderbird (and I assume in many other clients, too) I have the option to choose between âSSL/TLSâ and âSTARTTLSâ.
As far as I understand it, âSTARTTLSâ means in simple words âencrypt if both ends support TLS, otherwise donât encrypt the transferâ. And âSSL/TLSâ means in simple words âalways encrypt or donât connect at allâ. Is this correct?
