the forest is on fire. smoke hangs heavy in the air, rendering it hard to breathe. but for ryuusuke, whose quirk is the production and manipulation of dragon-like fire, ash and cinder neither hinder his breathing nor disturb his eyes. no, the only impact the burning woods have on him is a creeping sense of dread ( not that he would ever admit it ). it is a primal fear that settles deep in his gut and refuses to let go, and within minutes of the fire starting, the reason becomes clear.
one villain. two. three -- more? and one of them has a fire quirk that is definitely stronger than his own. if it was a little fire, he could manipulate it like he does his own . . . but this is completely beyond him. within minutes fighting is breaking out all around them -- classmates getting hurt, villains whose goals are unclear. the only thing ryuusuke knows is that their lives are in danger and they will only survive by giving it everything they have.
he would be more than happy to take on that fire user himself -- he is more likely to be resistant to the flames than his classmates, and a part of himself wants to rage at the notion of someone coming into his territory and setting it ablaze. unfortunately . . . ryuusuke cannot find him. that, and he knows he is not supposed to be using his quirk without authorization.
then the notice comes in. they are granted emergency usage of their quirks to defend themselves in this time of crisis. one thing he knows is that there are a lot of unknowns here, and that his classmates are likely to get hurt. the first thing he needs to do is team up with others.
as he travels through the forest, ryuusuke can hear the sounds of fighting from multiple areas. he chooses the source that sounds the closest, and heads off in that direction. the sound of explosions and crackling ice tell him that he is probably heading toward katsuki and todoroki, among others. it annoys him to have to potentially share space with katsuki, but this is no time to be petty. he continues on.
and that's when his world got a whole lot smaller.
it is nearly impossible to describe the sensation that overtakes him. the world swirls around him and then disappears into a sea of blurry colors and motion. he moves his limbs, but seemingly to no avail -- it is almost as if he is floating. he can feel that he is moving somehow, but he has no control, and has no idea where he is. it is disorienting, and makes him feel nauseated. instinctively, he feels that this is probably a villain's attack, but he cannot seem to figure it out in this moment.
before he can start to adjust to . . . whatever that quirk was, it releases. the world snaps back into place and he falls to the ground somewhere he was not before. he lifts his head, regaining his bearings, just in time to see a masked man phasing through a portal. that man had katsuki in hand, and would take him through the portal. the next thing he notices is izuku. he seems like a mess, devastated by what ryuusuke now recognizes to be villains departing with katsuki. the sound of him standing up must get izuku's attention, as the next thing he knows, izuku is there in front of him, embracing him. it is an awkward embrace, though, and ryuusuke notices just how messed up izuku's body is. cuts and bruises everywhere, and his arms . . . it makes ryuusuke's breath catch in his throat when he notices those mangled arms. when he speaks his words are breathless, dazed, and confused.
