Smazels are much smaller compared to other sophants in the galaxy. Combine that with the fact that they are a hyper-social species who are healthiest when they're inseparable from their group, many of the smazels that cohabitate with other sophants opt to do tasks around the settlement in a mech if they have to means to build or acquire one. Mechs are suitable for pulling weight, carrying cargo, and long distance travel, and can perform heavyweight tasks such as construction and shipments, or delicate tasks such as mechanical tinkering and surgeries, so long as the smazels piloting them are up to the task.
Because each familial or platonic group are so closely knit, each individual in a group usually comes together to share a career or skill. An entire group of (usually) between three and thirteen smazel can be treated as a single professional in their field, and while cohabitating with more individualistic sophants, having the group in a mech makes it easier to be interacted with collectively as an individual.

You wanna know what'd suck? If aliens came to Earth and looked at history and instead of talking about our cultures, inventions, or even wars, they just called us dirty or gross because there have been a lot of plagues and now "maggot-men" and "swines" are new slurs because we "roll around in shit and filth"

Zrai are cold blooded and have smooth moist skin fit for the semi-aquatic environment they evolved in, the salty reef-mangrove coastlines. They've evolved chromatophores on their skin to display their emotions, and every zrai language heavily incorporates color as a supplement to vocal speech, which is especially useful underwater. Each language uses unique colorful flashing stripe patterns, but all their languages use the same color for each emotion, with few exceptions.
It's very difficult but possible for a zrai to learn how display any color they want independently of how they feel, it's a skill that generally takes years of practice to pull off effectively, though rarely it comes naturally for a small few. Those that can pull this off are usually regarded by fellow zrai and other sophant species in the galaxy as emotionally mature and above average intelligence compared to other zrai, and often live in or move to nedal settlements to pursue careers in acting and performance (though it varies whether they live up to the high exceptions put for them).
Males evolved to generally have more choromatophores so their matriarchal female partner can keep better track of their harem. Also, most females who you ask would tell you it makes them more cute :>
Selkra is a lifelong critter doodler and chronic daydreamer who's been meticulously worldbuilding alien societies since first playing Spore in 2009. In the meantime, Selkra resides somewhere on Earth doing people activities such as arts and crafts on the floor, hugging plushies, staring at bugs and mustering up the patience to read sci-fi novels.
Broken Yolk Galaxy is an alien worldbuilding project primarily focused on the lives of three roommates traveling in the Spectrum Solar System on the spaceship Apex. There's pilot Rutan the stout blue holographic model artist who's enthused about ancient websites, virtual reality and lucid dreaming, his best friend the red and trunk-nosed copilot Donelja who works as a desert ecosystem conservationist on a terraformed moon while keeping a hobby of nature photography, and the lanky yellow four-armed Vertex who was found at a ghost town as a hobo and taken in right when the duo were looking for another housemate, half out of pity and half out of morbid curiosity, but so far all Vertex does is eat tv dinners and complain about the interior decorating.

Rutan has a rare skin variation that permanently leaves most of his skin surface with a light blue color, as opposed to the norm of having most of the skin above the waist having the ability to shift between multiple colors.
Since zrai show emotions using their color changing skin, Rutan has difficulty expressing himself unless he turns his back to face other zrai he's talking to, as his only few working chromatophores are on his back. Since Ru spends his young adult life primarily among nedal in nedal-majority society, he's adapted to expressing with body language like a nedal does, which is unfortunately confusing (at worst unsettling) whenever he accidentally does it when interacting with other zrai from his isolated homelands. On the flip side, most nedal Rutan meets consider his expressions and light blue color to be adorable, and he enjoys the attention.
