Fireproof Billstan Headcanons/Lore Part 5
A couple of people showed interest in another installment, so here you go!
-disagreements and unresolved issues:
I think Bill will always have to grapple with not being Stan’s only important priority. I’ll be clear: he definitely is at the top in terms of importance in Stan’s life, but knowing that there are other people (specifically Ford) that can influence Stan just as much as he can REALLY bothers him.
He does logically understand that Stan can’t revolve EVERYTHING in his life around Bill, but that lack of control is something he has to learn to really tolerate without making other people miserable. Lack of control = weakness to Bill, who even at his weakest won't admit that he's vulnerable. Stan frequently has to check in with Bill to remind him that just because Bill can’t be involved in every facet of his life doesn’t make him any less loved and cherished by Stan. It’s a work in progress.
Another issue would arise as they get older and death draws closer. Bill would either want them to be become immortal through some ritual or die with Stan because NO WAY is he living life without his husband. Stan does not want to be immortal nor does he want Bill to kill himself after he dies. This is something that will always be a reoccurring argument.
Bill would keep on trying to bring it up during casual conversation. “SO! DEATH! NOT A HUGE OF IT, ESPECIALLY YOURS. LET’S DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.” And Stan’s just like, “Bill, I’m not drinking some wacky fountain water. It tastes like nickels.”
-Again, not the perfect couple. Not by a long shot lol. Stan DOES like Bill’s clinginess and protective/possessive nature because it makes him feel wanted. But there are times that if he makes a decision Bill doesn’t like, Bill will switch up and get very moody and snippy and distant (avoidant Bill is canon to me). And this makes Stan feel horrible, like he made a mistake. Bill, to be clear, isn’t so much meaning to punish Stan as he is wanting to make sure that his displeasure is known…and maybe guilt-trip Stan a teensy bit to make him change his mind.
Bill, on the other hand…hmm. He definitely doesn't appreciate how stubborn Stan can get on certain issues and not budge, especially when he feels offended. The grumpiness and sour mood is such a killjoy, but also its that same stubbornness that pushes Bill to put the work in to meet Stan halfway.
-why didn’t I make Bill’s last name “Birchtree” instead of “Birch” in Fireproof? Wouldn’t that have made the plot more interesting if he had a direct link to Silas Birchtree and the Ciphertologists?
Confession time: I was not really interacting with the fandom much when I first started outlining the story and had missed the secret pages. I did not know that the cult actually had hidden pages dedicated to it. I managed to add some elements to it last minute-such as the church, the locket, and Bill’s obsession with the Society of the Blind Eye-without reworking the plot but by then I couldn’t really plug it in smoothly, so I just left it be. Otherwise there’d be random people in the middle of the night knocking on the shack’s door looking for the reincarnation of their leader and Bill would have to bs a reading for them.
-Ford and Bill take a long time to truly be comfortable around each other. More so, Ford has to not only accept the fact that Bill is part of his family and is going to be a part of his life forever, but he also has to confront what he has gone through at the hands of his own Bill (Cipher).
To me, (even in canon) Ford spent those thirty years not truly sorting out his feelings and the abuse he suffered by the hands of someone he had trusted whole-heartedly. Again, I am in the camp that Bill and Ford has a very ambiguous and deep connection that can't really be labeled as romance (not to say that it can't be ruled out). However, the very nature of their relationship was destined for failure (but I won't get into that here of all places), and Ford has a long journey of healing ahead of him that is several times more challenging with a living reminder of his greatest mistake.
On Bill's end, he's wary of Ford at times and keeps a weathered eye out for sabotage, but aside from being a bit butthurt he doesn't have much of a grudge. He kind of sees them as being "even" in terms of hurting each other. "I screwed you over and you screwed me over, fair is fair even if I'm still a bit salty over it" mentality.
-During the holidays Stan dresses up as Santa to scam parents into paying for overpriced photo ops with their kids. All of the letters he’s given get used as fire kindling to save on heat. Bill graduates from elf to Mrs. Claus over the years and Soos is always Rudolph. Soos usually gets hospitalized for eating too many carrots since Stan charges extra for feeding the reindeer
