you know something that really gets me about the way they fight in The Old Guard? they all trust the others to watch their back, but they also all trust the others to be capable and take care of themselves.
iâm going to once again talk about the shot where nile shoves a guy to nicky, who throws him over his shoulder to joe, who shoots him, because that moment is outstanding and sums up the dynamic of this whole movie:
by putting enemies behind their own backs, they are saying âi trust you not to let them attack meâ and that is awesome and i love it. but they are also saying âi trust that you can take care of yourself and can handle this without meâ and that is amazing. like. these characters all care about each other so much and of course want to protect each other, but they also know that all of them are incredibly capable warriors, and respect that. they donât feel the need to jump in and help at every moment, because they donât always need protecting. just?? the mutual trust is so great already but the mutual respect??? incredible.

The sad part of Fighting Choreography Class
is that I can't actually punch anyone when they piss me off. Makes me miss the old days, honestly.
The best I can do is pair them up with someone that's just as likely to pathetically swing at the air five feet in front of their face as accidentally punch them in the groin. Which can be nice because it makes for a sort of stunt version of Russian Roulette, which is sort of better.
