Happy Sunday all, unfortunately I’ve been out with the worst migraine I’ve had in a while, so I’m here just to quickly say that the sale on the website ends soon! Don’t miss out! Enjoy your Sunday all 🖤 #jennascuriocabinet #silverstag #silverstagbeetle #stagbeetle #stagbeetles #beetlesofinstagram #insectsofig #silverbeetle #silverbug #silverbugs (at Jenna's Curio Cabinet) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cb5TJXsqj_p/?utm_medium=tumblr
One of my most intense experiences with insects took place on a hilltop in #Borneo where a communications tower’s blinking lights attracted all kinds of insects including #RhinocerosBeetles and #StagBeetles like the top 2 beetles in the collage as well as #StickInsects and huge #FlyingInsects like the Cicadas In the bottom of the collage, that creeped me out. We were exploring the rainforest on logging roads, which, sadly, facilitated the destruction of the rainforest. We were on small motorcycles and had driven up to the tower. The men running the complex were very friendly and showed us some of the #Insects and some of their operation. I don’t know who they thought we were as we were using our less than adequate Bahasa Indonesia (Indonesian). This was almost exactly 43 years ago in 1978. I spent a year in the city of #Balikpapan where I was an English As A Second Language instructor affiliated with a mission. When I was there you could still get out into the rainforest in #KalimantanTimur by riding a half hour or less outside the city. After seeing graphics that showed the deforestation of the rainforest I became a bit of an armchair naturalist and activist. I still want people to see the wonders I saw. It is an uphill battle fighting palm oil plantations and illegal and legal logging operations that destroy wildlife habitat. The photos in the collage are, I believe, all from Creative Commons or other free to use photos. They are for educational purposes only. https://www.instagram.com/p/CLlkF1Zlvmc/?igshid=157tykv6pkz8t

The European stag beetle, we have them here in the forests. My first encounter with one was when I was a kid. Found one near home while playing. He was not moving much so I bring him home and put some water, that I mixed with the honey, close to him. On my surprise he moved and started drinking with the feathery tongue soon looking very much alive so I took him back outside to release him and he flew off onto a tree. I was really impressed with the little guy as a kid. Unfortunately they are now red flagged as endangered species in many countries across EU. Stag beetles are harmless and do not damage living wood or timber. They are quite helpful for the forests ecosystems as the larvae feed on decaying wood. 🤍 . : :. :: :.: ...... #stagbeetle #stagbeetles #painting #artwork #natureart #animalsarefriends #animalsareawesome https://www.instagram.com/p/CDM-6C1pHLY/?igshid=1u6e606mcv4es
I shared the story about my encounter with many large beetles and other insects yesterday but in case you missed it here it is... I spent a year in the city of #Balikpapan where I was an English As A Second Language instructor affiliated with a mission. I spotted this fellow while hiking near #KinabaluPark in #SabahMalaysia. When I meet other hikers they're shocked to find me alone in the forest. "Aren't you afraid?" They always ask. I have hiked solo through several countries and find the forest to be the safest place for me. Cities and other people are what you should fear, but even then most which you encounter are kind and caring. In the forest, I find peace and wonders like this large stag beetle. It makes me laugh when large men gape at the stories of my night hikes and mountain climbs. I wonder if they'd question my activities so much if I were male? Regardless, I'm thankful for my Watson Fellowship and how it has made me courageous enough to explore rainforests of the world. https://www.instagram.com/p/B83geHig9j3/?igshid=sdwzi92y5r04
