In rewatching the film, I've come to realize that of the Second-Borns, I would hate to have Tuma's abilities. Not because of what it is, but because the absolute WEIGHT and RESPONSIBILITY of his powers has the potential to be devastating.

I mean, in the media we've seen two examples of this prowess (and on two different ends of the spectrum): hero that is Allison Hargreeves and villain that is the Purple Man.

In Umbrella Academy, we've seen Allison grapple with it, but at least 1. she was a good guy, a hero, and 2. she had the buffer that is triggering her ability with "I Heard A Rumor." In Jessica Jones, the Purple Man manipulated and had no regard for anyone's free will but his own.

Here in this film we were introduced to a carefree, popular teenage prince who, yeah he looked out for his own fun and fancy at first, but when he truly realized the weight that his LITERAL WORDS carried, Tuma sought to not be that asshole and actually care about others.

But still, it makes you wonder, even worry, about times where if he accidentally says something and it causes bad things to happen? Or if he, like any normal person, lets their emotions get the better of them. Frustration, anger, sadness, pain... All those can always cause an unintentional outburst.

Sam is so gay coded it hurts.

If January wasn’t evil then they would’ve had to make her gay for Sam. Those are the only two explanations for their onscreen energy. I don’t make the rules.

Also who names there kid January. Sorry if I offend anyone, but oml.

The actual gay character mentions a boyfriend once and it’s completely glossed over, but Disney still gets their “We’ve got gays!” Trophy.

Im serious this dude was in the hospital and you’re telling me the boyfriend didn’t visit him at all?

They have a whole conversation where he’s so touched that she remembered his gluten allergy, but no “Oh hey! Where’s your boyfriend by the way?” “Oh, I sent him to go get snacks so we could have our secret chat.” I’m tired of Disney’s “Blink and you’ll miss it” gays.

I’m super bummed that January was evil! I also feel like she could’ve just used the command power to make someone kill her brother, but I guess the plot demanded otherwise.

If they can take away powers and memories then why lock Edmund up with a collar that depletes his powers? Why not take them avatar the last air bender style?

They really tried to cram everything into 90 minutes didn’t they? The plot was so jumbled and weird because of the run time.

I also kind of feel like there was a lot of mental/physical abuse towards the kids. I get the idea of training hard to be the best, but sometimes it went a little too far for me personally.

As someone who struggles with auditory overload and hyper focusing as symptoms of my adhd it was a little hard for me to watch some of the scenes where Sam was upset because of her super senses being overloaded, but that’s more a me thing not an actual criticism.

I realize a lot of this has been negative, but I genuinely liked the movie and would watch it again. I will also be keeping my eye out for the second one that they teased.

The concept was nice and the overall tone was great. I love the actors they chose and despite it being rushed and jumbled I actually liked the plot. Excluding the two easily fixable conflicts of course.

Any media that uses Le Tigre is a winner in my books.

Friendship was beautifully portrayed in every way.

A couple of the powers were pretty creative! And the more cliche powers weren’t excessively so.
