âRegina, We have gone through many things together, we have come a long way to get here, we share two beautiful children who could not have asked for a better mother for them and I can not conceive my life without you, would you do me the honor of marrying me?â Emma asked kneeling and pulling out a ring.
âOh Emma...â
âI know if you arenât ready.....â
âNo! sillyâ She said kneeling as well âI had this ring with me for a whole time, waiting for the perfect time and you... just you my beautiful idiot you just did it.â
âso... is that a yes?â Emma asked with that adorable smile.
âof course! Yes!â Regina replied with tears in her eyes and a beautiful smile, that smile that is about Emma.
@juicecupswanqueen was my gateway into Swan Queen fic when I read About Last Night back in 2015. Sheâs known mostly for her âfun sexy timesâ writing, but during Swan Queen Week in 2016 she wrote this really great, really balanced fic.
I totally missed it back then, but she re-posted it to her Tumblr fairly recently so I put it on my [Marked for Later] list and just finished it this morning. Loved it. Recommend it highly.
Juicyâs dialog and characterizations are always spot on, and her sense of humor is so, so charming. This is damn near perfect.
This prompt completely got away from me. I might follow up with it if thereâs enough interest!
âIn the next year or so you will start dream sharing with your future soulmate,â Ms. French told her health and sex ed class.
Regina wondered why they bothered to have sex ed at all if everyone knew who their soulmate was by sixteen. Then againâŚ
She looked over and saw August Booth mooning over Kathryn Nolan.
Thereâs no way theyâre soulmates.
Some people had sex with different people, she guessed. She wouldnât be one of them. Her mother had made that quite clear.
âYou wonât know right away,â Ms. French continued. âThey may seem like regular dreams at first. But as you get older you may be able to learn to control them.â
Ms. French spent the next forty minutes outlining ways to control dreams and what sort of things people did to send their soulmates messages.
âNow, donât get discouraged if you donât meet them right away. It usually takes years to learn how to control your dreams enough to communicate with the other person. According to our stateâs statistics, in Maine the median age people find their soulmate is 23, so you have quite a while before you might find your mate.â
When the bell rang there were excited whispers that radiated through the room.
âWeird lesson, huh?â Kathryn said as she and Regina walked toward their lockers.
âWell I think August is hoping you two dream share soon,â Regina told her.
âUgh, I hope not,â Kathryn replied.
âWho do you want it to be?â Regina asked.
âOh, I donât know. Maybe David Charming?â
âKathryn, you canât be serious,â Regina scoffed. âHe only has eyes for Mary Margaret. And thatâs one match that I wouldnât be surprised about.â
âWell who are you hoping for then?â Kathryn needled.
âNo one in particular,â Regina said nonchalantly, closing her locker and starting to walk away.
âThatâs a lie,â Kathryn accused, hurrying to catch up. âYou hope itâs Daniel Colter.â
âSo what if I do?â Regina asked, a little annoyed.
âNothingâs wrong with that, Regina,â Kathryn answered, slightly taken aback. âWhy are you snapping at me like this?â By then, theyâd reached Reginaâs conjuring class.
Regina stopped just short of the door. âBecause why get my hopes up?â She then disappeared into her next class, leaving Kathryn behind.
***
A few weeks later, Regina had her usual reoccurring dream she had at least twice a month-- the only dream she ever had.
She was in an open field, the breeze blowing just right. Her hair braided in a way specific to her fatherâs work. She was wearing her favorite outfit and carrying her favorite book.
As she walked to the middle of the meadow where she knew a hammock would be waiting for her. However, when she arrived, there was a swan sitting in it. Annoyed, she threw her book at it.
Instantly she woke up in a cold sweat. Odd⌠that was normally a good dream.
Her mind drifted back to Ms. Frenchâs lesson over shared dreams. It couldnât beâŚ
She leapt out of bed and retrieved her class notebook, where she had neatly written down all the ways she could control her dreams.
She glanced up at the clock. She only had a few more hours to sleep. She realized that wasnât enough time to get back to sleep and control her dream, so she decided she would try to tomorrow night.
***
The next few weeks she focused her mind before bed. Regina prided herself at being a quick learner and this was to be no exception. However, she was having very little success and it was interfering with her sleep schedule.
âWhatâs going on with you?â Kathryn asked one day while they were walking home, noticing that Regina had practically fallen asleep in class that morning.
âIâm just tired,â Regina growled.
âIâll say, but why?â Kathryn prodded.
âIâŚâ Regina sighed.
âTheyâve started, havenât they?â
âI wouldnât say âtheyâ have started. Itâs only one dream,â Regina admitted.
âWhat?â Kathryn came to a dead stop.
âWhat what?â Regina asked.
âRegina⌠soulmates that only share one dream⌠thatâs rare,â Kathryn told her.
âMs. French never said anything about that in class.â
âThatâs because it hasnât happened in, like, fifty years.â
âWell that seems ridiculous,â Regina replied.
âNo, itâs bigger than soulmates,â Kathryn insisted. âSoulmates that share one specific dream have a powerful amount of magic between them.â
âMother will be pleased, then.â
âYou canât tell anyone else,â Kathryn told her quickly.
âWhy not?â
âIf the magical community finds out theyâll keep you separate forever.â
âThat canât be right,â Regina replied, frowning.
âIt is,â Kathryn said. âI could probably find a few articles at the library.â
âFine. I want proof,â Regina told her.
âOkay, but I warned you,â Kathryn said.
***
It turned out that Kathryn was right. Sheâd picked up article after article about soulmates that single dream share and brought them back to the table she and Regina were occupying in the library.
Regina read dozens of articles about the first identified couple that single dream shared and how they nearly destroyed an entire community. From that point on, any teenagers that spoken about single dream sharing was prevented from finding their other half.
âThere are plenty of rumors as to why there havenât been single dream sharers in so long,â Kathryn told her, biting into an apple sheâd brought with her. â One rumor is that word doesnât get out that a couple has been identified. Another one is that couples who realize early, go into hiding. The most interesting rumor is that single dream sharers have a proclivity for coming from single dream families and that all or most of the gene has died off.â
âI donât come from a single dream share family,â Regina said certainly. She loved her parents-- each in their own way-- but they werenât the happiest of couples.
âMaybe your soulmate does,â Kathryn suggested.
âOr maybe itâs like you said-- rumors.â
Kathryn shrugged. âEither way, you canât tell anyone.â
Regina looked at the sea of material she had just read through. Keeping it a secret was obvious. She didnât want to end up lonely, torn from her other half.
âI have to find him, then,â Regina said with determination.
âWait, look at this,â Kathryn said, mid bite of her apple.
Regina sidled over to her friend and looked at where her friend was pointing.
âWhat is that?â
âItâs⌠well itâs sort of an old and slightly forbidden way of controlling your dreams,â Kathryn admitted.
âWhat do you mean by âslightlyâ?â Regina asked. âAnd why didnât Ms. French tell us about any of this?â
âThe government doesnât take into account people like us, Regina,â Kathryn said. âThey donât expect sixteen-year-olds to go searching through old archives about single dream sharers or other ways to control dreams. They set the curriculum and Ms. French teaches it.â
âWhy is this one illegal?â Regina asked.
âBecause it has a high risk of being dangerous,â Kathryn explained. âDoing this might make you lose control of your body.â
âWhat happens? You canât get up? You die?â Regina pressed.
Kathryn shrugged. âNo one knows. Not for sure, anyway.â
âExplain,â Regina demanded, sitting down.
Kathryn pulled out an article that looked like it was ancient. âThere was⌠a study done once. Completely unethical, never fully released or proven. One man claimed that using this method-- especially with single dream sharers-- caused the soulmates to switch bodies.â
âWhy would that make it illegal?â Regina asked.
âWe havenât taken illicit magic yet, but body swapping is one of them,â Kathryn told her. âYou could be tried for kidnapping, treason, or worse.â
Regina took in a shaky breath. âWhat percentage of non-single dream sharers can achieve this?â
âThe numbers say less than 1%,â Kathryn told her.
âAnd⌠single dream sharers?â
â50% if one soulmate does it and⌠100% if both soulmates use this technique on the same night.â
Regina pushed back from the table, imagining the prospects. Using this technique made controlling the dream easier, meaning she would have a better shot at connecting with her soulmate, but using it also meant that she and her soulmate might switch bodies.
âI want to try,â Regina whispered. âIf my soulmate comes to school as me tomorrow Iâm counting on you to help him.â
âDonât tell me youâre not the least bit curious.â
âIâŚâ Kathryn hesitated. She wanted to know if it was possible. âOkay, fine, Iâll take care of him.â
Regina stood up and hugged her best friend. âThank you.â
âYou better hope no one finds out.â
***
Regina settled down into bed like usual. But she knew this wasnât like every other night. Sheâd set out an appropriate outfit with a note on it in case her soulmate woke up in her body.
As she laid there, she stayed very still, deepening her breathing like she was already asleep, attempting to trick her body into putting her into sleep paralysis.
She felt it in her toes first and the sensation inched up her body, while at the same time it fogged up her head.
Stick with it, Regina. Perseverance!
She didnât know how long she could sit still like that, the feeling very uncomfortable, whenâŚ
She was in an open field, the breeze blowing just right. Her hair braided in a way specific to her fatherâs work. She was wearing her favorite outfit and carrying her favorite book.
As she walked to the middle of the meadow where she knew a hammock would be waiting for her. However, when she arrived, there was a swan sitting in it.
âDonât scare it away,â she whispered to herself.
As she cautiously walked toward the swan, it noticed her, quickly getting out of the hammock as if apologizing for being in her space.
Strange. Animals donât normally act like that. UnlessâŚ
Regina dug into the recesses of her conscious mind, retrieving an animal to human transformation spell.
She approached the swan as it curiously regarded her, letting her approach it. When she was mere inches away she recited the spell.
In an instant, the swan transformed into a beautiful blonde, but before they had a chance to speak, their hands touched and Regina felt a shock go through her body before everything went dark.
***
When Emma Swan woke up she was disoriented. She was most certainly not in her room.
She sat up quickly and noticed a pile of clothes-- again, not hers. On top of the clothes was a note.
Dear soulmate,
After you read this I need you to destroy it. My name is Regina Mills and I may have used illegal magic to find out who you are? Okay, I most certainly did. Using this technique we may have switched bodies, hence the note. I need you to be me for the day. I know I set myself up for a slight disadvantage in your body, but Iâve told my best friend, Kathryn Nolan (sheâll approach you) about what might happen.
Body swapping is illegal, so I need you to try your best to be me.
There were a few more pages with detailed instructions, but Emmaâs mind was reeling. She and her soulmate had body-swapped. And her soulmate is a woman.
She ran to to the mirror to examine her temporary face-- the face of her soulmate.
Wow, she beautiful, Emma thought.
Remembering the rest of Reginaâs letter, she followed it the best she could. Skirts were not Emmaâs thing, but she assumed Regina must wear them regularly since her closet was full of them.
Getting to school was fairly easy, as Regina told Emma that she and Zelena would walk there together. Finding her homeroom class was slightly more difficult and Emma was starting to get nervous. Where was Kathryn?
âRegina!â Kathryn called.
Emma whipped around to see a small blonde coming her way. She stayed silent, not sure what to say.
âI need to talk to you,â Kathryn said, nonchalantly.
Oh crap. She wasnât even sure if this was Kathryn.
Kathryn led her to the bathroom and turned toward her expectantly. âSo?â
âSoâŚ?â
Kathrynâs eyes widened in disbelief. âYouâre either a really good liar, Regina or⌠youâre not Regina.â
Emma shuffled her feet and scratched the back of her neck nervously. âAre you Kathryn?â
âOh my god! Wow⌠okay. Keep it together, Kathryn,â Kathryn babbled to herself. She took a deep breath and stuck out her hand. âHi. Kathryn Nolan, official best friend to Regina Mills, and your caretaker for the day.â
Emma shook Kathrynâs hand even if she felt a little silly. âUm⌠Emma Swan, Reginaâs⌠soulmate, very confused and overwhelmed.â
Kathryn took a small step back. âEmma, huh?â
âSurprise! Reginaâs queer!â Emma chuckled nervously.
âThatâs neither here nor there,â Kathryn replied, waving it off. âI probably couldâve guessed.â
âSo⌠Maine,â Emma started.
âOh shit,â Kathryn whispered. âYouâre not from Maine?â
âNope,â Emma told her, shrugging.
âWhere do you live?â
âMassachusetts. Boston, to be exact,â Emma answered.
âInteresting,â Kathryn mused. âWell, we have a lot to talk about today!â
Emma smiled at her nervously, glad to have a guide-- she only hoped Regina was doing alright in her foster homeâŚ
***
That night, Emma did as the letter instructed. She burned it hours ago, but she memorized the important parts.
Alright Emma, you can do this.
She took deep breaths and laid very still. She felt it in her toes first and the sensation inched up her body, while at the same time it fogged up her head-- exactly how Regina told her it would feel.
Suddenly, she was in her dream. A few months ago a hammock had appeared so she sat in it. But she had clearly been trespassing, because this huge horse approached her, steaming mad. It wasnât until the night before that the horse turned into Regina.
âRegina?â Emma called.
âOver here,â Regina called from Emmaâs body.
âWell this is surreal,â Emma muttered. She walked toward her cautiously-- she didnât want to switch back just yet.
âWas Kathryn good to you?â Regina asked.
âThe best,â Emma replied.
âI guess she knows Iâm bi, now,â Regina said, blushing.
âShe actually took that pretty well,â Emma replied. âUm⌠how was your day?â
âIâm sorry,â is all Regina could say.
Emma shuffled her feet. âIâm used to it, itâs okay.â
âIâm going to come find you,â Regina promised.
âKathryn told me we have to be careful.â
Regina smiled sadly. âYeah, we do, but⌠youâre worth it.â
âYou hardly know me,â Emma replied, confused as to why anyone would ever look at her with such love.
âI canât wait to get to know you better,â Regina told her.
At that, Regina took Emmaâs hand and everything went dark.
For anyone that was wondering if SQW died, it didnât. I almost did (hyperbolicly speaking) but thatâs not the point. Itâs still happening. Iâm still here.Â

I know what the rules are on Swan Queen week. I posted for day 1 and had a fic that didn't save for whatever reason for day 2. Would people mind if I do the updates sometime in the coming weeks? I'm currently on holiday and unable to access a computer or phone for long stretches of time.
Me, rising from my long slumber: *Logs onto Tumblr.*

Later that evening, in the floral room at Grannyâs, she definitely does not rub one out to the image of a snarling Regina striding across the yard towards her.
