the wild thing is jon is the one who ended up throwing out the "i need you"/"i miss you"s, directly to martin's face, while martin ends s4 with at most "be safe", on a /tape/
while martin mainly is like "hey you want some tea" "anyway im not gonna let you Die Again" /self-isolates/
HMM YEP AND THATâS JUST PERFECT HONESTLY. Jon was the one who was grumpy and hostile at the start while Martin was just trying to Be Fucking Nice, then Jon was the one who pushed everyone away while Martin desperately tried to hold everyone together. So itâs so much more satisfying to see Jon be blatant and honest about how much he cares, specifically to Martin.
Over three seasons, Jon finally learned he needs people. Not just needs them to be okay and exist in some vague, distant way but actually needs them around him, both to keep him steady and stable and because itâs an emotional necessity.Â
Martin seemed to believe he needed people from the beginning, but a lot of his behavior trying to connect with them or even help them connect with each other resulted in him being pushed away, sometimes really harshly. In a way, he ended up learning the opposite lesson - that he canât connect with people. He can try to take care of them and try to keep them safe and have them in that vague, distant way, but not the way that matters. (And naturally Peter swoops in like sup, I see youâve done half the work for me already.)
Thereâs about a dozen different things going on in that âletâs gouge our eyes out togetherâ conversation, and there are a lot of reasons Martin doesnât believe Jon is serious. But I think one of them is that Martin hears Jon say that he trusts him and wants to leave with him, he can sense the intense emotions behind Jonâs words, (especially when he says âtogether,â) and goes âhmm sounds fake.âÂ
Which is why itâs so good and important for Jon to be the one to say things like âI miss you/I need you/I came here for youâ and for Martin to be the one to hear them!!
