what if decs kissing (any au btw or even surprise me, i need them to kiss!!)
I know this is two months late but at least I have it in time for Halloween! The official Decs Holiday
Even after almost a year of renovating his little bookstore to also host a coffee shop, Specs wasn’t quite used to getting up far earlier than before, the morning crowd especially lucrative when it was about way too damn early in the morning. He was more of a night owl, had always been, but he had to admit the increase in profits almost made up for… everything.
He yawned as Skittery, his business partner, set up the coffee makers and cleaned them while Specs wiped the tables, knowing everyone here this early was more likely to get coffee than any of his books. There were some sales to booklovers like himself, but most people saw the only coffee shop in the street and got drawn to the smell of roasted beans in the morning.
“Take it to the grave” was definitely a name that wrongly kept some people away from Specs’ little shop, but he’d been tired and wanted something at least vaguely gothic. That was just his thing.
“You gonna get us some muffins from Pie or somethin’? We still got half an hour until opening.”, Skittery asked, sounding a bit gruff still, also not really a morning person. They bonded over that, at least. They’d been friends for years, and luckily throwing a little shop together hadn’t changed that.
“Sure. Be back in a minute.” Specs threw the cleaning rag behind the counter to the cleaning supplies and shrugged over his dark coat, even the short move through the cold Fall air worth bundling up.
Pie Eater’s Bakery was almost right across the street from Specs’ little bookstore, much brighter and livelier, for the most part, as well as the best pastries, muffins, cakes, even some breads the town had to offer. Edward was friendly, if a bit quiet, and fiercely loyal. They got along well. Most days getting something from him took no longer than a minute, Specs still too early to even catch the morning rush, getting a very brief conversation with the tall baker and being out the door with his sweets secured.
Today, he could already tell, wouldn’t be such a day.
For starters, Pie wasn’t alone behind the counter, a lean blond standing with him, thin glasses on his nose and a smile Specs could already tell would be the death of him. Eyes clearer than the sky on a winter’s day, hair gold like an angel’s and-
“Victor. Morning.”, greeted Edward, and Specs got pulled out of his stupor. He walked closer, careful as if the beautiful mirage in front of him would disappear. “This is Zacharias.”, his friend introduced, as soon as Specs had gotten close enough.
With that smile directed directly at him, Specs was lucky his heart didn’t stop beating instantly, and he had enough wits about him to shake the blond’s hand as it was outstretched over the counter. “Hi you can call me Dutchy, if you want. Nice to meet you. I heard you manage the bookstore across the street?”
Even his voice- “I do. It’s my passion, really. If you ever need a book, or coffee, you’re always, hrm, welcome.” That was probably a bit too breathless to be casual, but Specs had never been particularly easy to embarrass.
“So, what would you want? We have some little pumpkin cookies and muffins for October already. Pie made them, don’t worry, I’m not that good yet.”
“I’m sure I’d love whatever you made.”, Specs assured, knowing he’d gladly get poisoned for just one single bite of something homemade from the wonderful man.
He got rewarded with a bashful laugh and a tray full of the pumpkin-themed baked goods. “You like fall?”
“October is my favourite month, actually.” It wouldn’t have been hard to see, not with Specs’ dark clothes and with how much he decorated his bookshop every year for Halloween. Possibly a bit overkill, but how could he ever resist his favourite holiday? “We have some events, too.”
“I’ll show up, if you tell me when.” Specs had a feeling the smile was a bit flirtier this time, but he didn’t want to interpret too much into it.
He picked out two muffins and two cookies and paid. “I’ll bring you a flying tomorrow- or- I mean if you work tomorrow, at least.”
“I probably do. Nice to meet you, again, Victor.”
As Specs got out into the cold fall air again, he barely felt it, chest warm and sappy grin on his face, not even dampened by Skittery’s foul mood. “Why’d it take you so long- what’s that face for?”
He grabbed Specs’ sweets he bought and quickly started eating while setting the last things up. “Pie has a new coworker.”
“Oh god.”, Skittery groaned, “Don’t tell me you’ll keep bein’ like that every day.”
Specs looked across the street, barely seeing a blond and a brunet behind the counter. “Don’t make me remind you of the time you pined after your now boyfriends for three months.”
Skittery glared, but he knew he didn’t have anything to retort to that. “Just don’t pine too hard around me. You get over there every day to buy sweets anyways.”
“I’ll talk to him. Tomorrow.”, Specs assured him, mostly to get him off his back. He’d just spend his time before anyone got in to actually buy any book of him.
He didn’t talk to Dutchy tomorrow. Well, he did, Dutchy had been the only one at the counter the next morning, Pie rummaging in the back, but they still only exchanged some smalltalk, Specs not daring to ask him for a date or… anything.
Which went on like that for the next few weeks, until Specs took an afternoon to put up his Halloween decorations between customers. Skittery was helping, too, even letting him put some black cats and fall leaves around his tables and coffee machines.
Specs had just stretched on one of his ladders to put light-up pumpkins on some of his bookshelves, when a beautiful voice he now recognized by heart interrupted him: “You really are dedicated.”
Specs turned and smiled at Dutchy, almost losing his footing and quickly getting down the ladder. “Uh, hi. No work today? Or do you just want to buy something quickly in your break?”
The blond smiled, letting his eyes drift over the books and decorations before ending on Specs’ brown hair. “You got… wait, let me…”
He stepped closer and gently took something out of his hair behind his ear, a red leaf.
Even with having gotten used to his looks, his smiles and his voice over the weeks, being this close was a wholly new sensation.
“Actually, I’m not just here to buy something. I brought you something. And wanted to ask… something private.”, Zacharias admitted, pulling a folded paper box out of his bag. He still hadn’t gotten any farther away from Specs again, making his ears and cheeks flush slightly.
“Those are my first Pie-approved cookies. Says they’re good enough to sell just like his own and… I wanted to bring you some. You said you’d love anything I make, after all.”
Specs carefully took the box, a small nametag attached as well as some Halloween Stickers. “I don’t… know what to say, Zach. Thank you.”
The blond finally stepped away, just a bit, easing Specs’ breathing, but making him yearn for the closeness again. “You can just say yes to a date. As thanks.”
That was definitely a surprising, if not unwelcome surprise. Specs had worried for weeks, if he should ask him out or not, and this was so much easier. “Absolutely, always and wherever you want. I could die happily by your hand after.”
“Oh my god, are you serious, don’t do this during work!”, interrupted Skittery, glaring at them from where he’d just peaked into the aisle between the bookshelves. “You got people at the counter. Flirt later, I can’t help with findin’ one of these books, I can only sell things and even that is not my job, Victor.”
The temptation to throw a pumpkin at Skittery’s head was great. No one would miss him that much, right? At least not until his boyfriends searched for him in the evening, if he just disposed of him now…
“I’ll text you later.”, Dutchy said with amusement, giving him a kiss on the cheek. Correction: Specs could die happily already, the date wasn’t even necessary. “Get back to helping your customers, my break is also over. And eat the cookies, I want to hear what you think of them.”
Specs waved after him, mourning slightly he didn’t get to kiss his hand farewell, but at another annoyed rasp from Skittery, he got remembered he had work to do. If he had any other option he’d close the shop right now, but Skittery would kill him if he did.
Yet, every free minute was spent looking over at the bakery, seeing a blond move behind the counter, butterflies fluttering around in his insides at just the thought of their date.
The cookie tasted just as good as he’d expected, though he was sure he’d have said that about everything Dutchy would have brought him, even if it had been poison. There was nothing that could keep him from going on that date with the blond, and from making it the best date he’d ever been to.
He already knew he’d love Dutchy pulling his face forward to kiss him, slightly pulling at his hair while Specs held him close by the hips and neck, ready to spend his whole life just doing that if he lets him.
