San Francisco Bay Area metal titans @Machine_Head, released their highly anticipated new album Catharsis on January 26 via Nuclear Blast Entertainment. Now, the worldwide chart positions are in, including three Top 5, two Top 10 and five Top 20 entries. Catharsis also holds the highest ever entries for the band in Germany, Switzerland, Scotland and Spain. I got the new MachineHead in the mail Saturday. Didn’t get a chance to actually listen to it until Monday though. If you like metal and you go on YouTube or read Decibel you will know that a lot of people HATE this album. Honestly, when I heard the first or rather watched the first three songs the band put up on YouTube I was kinda doubtful about this album. I could hear a lot of production stuff on Catharsis and Kaleidoscope that I didn’t like. And the videos were kind of weird. Then Robb Flynn is telling people that this wasn’t going to be the heaviest album MH has put out in their history and to lower our expectations. So now I’m like “ damn do I even want to get this album? But I still found myself listening to Catharsis on YouTube, and then one day I was listening to Catharsis and not watching it and it dawned on me....this is still Machine Fuckin Head. So when I put the new album on I opened my ears and listened to the new MachineHead. And while I won’t lie and say that this is the best MachineHead I have ever heard, it’s still Machine Head. And while it kinda sorta sounds like Burning Red era MachineHead , it doesn’t. It sounds like MachineHead in 2018. Not MachineHead in 1998. MachineHead in 1998 weren’t good enough to make this album. Personally I think it’s a smart move for the band to try and offer their fans something new and different. How many more 25 minute songs could this band make? Then you have some people that crying about the political stuff on this record or about Robb Flynn’s political stances. I really,really don’t understand that. Rock has been political from pretty early on. Metal has been too. Just listen to War Pigs or Lord Of This World and tell me those aren’t political. Just go listen to Sepultura’s Arise and Chaos AD. Political as fuck. Anti fascist as fuck. Anyway if you are a MachineHead fan I think you will dig this record. If you are looking for The Blackening part 5 then you might not like it.
