SPN mini fanfiction / Dean Winchester, Benny Lafitte /Â Gen, PG-rated
Even your own name loses its meaning if being pronounced too often in the air rattling;  assume that before such a meaning existed and was revealed before your mind’ lenses at the first request. The spiral shavings of days stack in the same thin layers, no matter how many things you killed today; time shifts in equal intervals: the click of a clockwork, a circle turning, a new meridian. The true essence of time is comprehended in the absence of chronometers;  so much of that goodness lays around that no life will be enough to throw it away. And then all of a sudden, without any warning, you get a sign. One day, God opens an eye through which this blessed world seems to him probably a very amusing place, and he sents a man to Purgatory.
Benny seems to refer to the point of an unprecedented fall in a tidal wave of curiosity, feverish animation, all kinds of inconceivable rumors swirling around: the man turned out to be some kind of sophisticated hunter, who contributed a lot to the expansion of the local contingent, and even a heavenly vessel or its contents, he saw either God, or the devil, or both at once, was on a short footing with Death - and even killed Eve the progenitor. Benny remembers Eve faintly, only as a slow heavy breathing in the depths of the forest, a cold halitus that smelled of youthful brainless life. One day, a young woman fell down from the low heavens like a meteor, burnt to a crust of coal, still alive - and immediately rushed back, and six months later, the newcomers reported the Mother’s death.
Benny gives in to the general impulse, goes in the same direction as everyone does. Later, he will remember this with a grin: the man, as it turned out, really wore his own invisible, swift and greedy reaper on his back.
 ***
Benny collects facts about Dean; it's not clear how to use them yet, but the picture emerges. For example, Dean falls silent only if you take him firmly by the throat, but being given even the slightest space to breathe, he immediately spreads his wings, becomes impudent. This almost doesn’t anger; Dean is used to making decisions for himself and others, clearly was born in the war and going to die there. Purgatory cuts off everything random and superficial from its inhabitants, demolishes personality superstructures, releasing the original, purest urge: flight or fight, and in this matter, Dean could give odds to anyone. It sometimes seems to Benny that the dirt which covers them from head to toe is not at all the dust of battles and wanderings, but slag protruding from the inside, the remnants of socialization burning out. Someday the healing air of this place will do its job, and they will become truly clean, free and lonely, as they came into this world.
Another important thing to keep in mind: Dean is a maniac.
 ***
At first, Dean tries to sleep, believing that he needs to recuperate. Benny doesn’t mock him,  waits for the man himself to admit his mistake. Here, the night is just a time of diminished visibility, but hearing becomes a powerful weapon. At first, Benny honestly works out his duty shift, following the Dean’s order, who decides that sleeping in trust of a dubious friend is still better than not sleeping at all. Later, he realizes that the night in Purgatory is also a period of exacerbation of the syndrome of excessive mental activity. Daytime movement disperses fear and anger, but in the dark you cannot escape from them. And although Dean is not too talkative, even his short, jerky confessions give Benny an idea of Dean's Problem Number One.
Benny himself knows well what forced isolation from the world and disappointment in his own family are, but here they are no help to each other. True, this trouble closely borders on the fact that Dean is a maniac, and Benny already knows that being in the focus of Dean's attention is as dangerous as it’s useful and flattering. At times, he even sympathizes with the mysterious Sam about this.
 ***
Dean laughably honors his car, but he doesn't spare it on the road. The speedometer shows one hundred as they drove to the clan manor, but on the way back the needle dances at fifty mark. Benny seems to understand what's going on.
“How was the family reunion?” he asks, and Dean purses his mouth silently.
 ***
Dean sometimes feels like he's a ghost. He experiences the impotent fury of a ghost, separated from the past by an ephemeral veil; here it is, life, very close, so close that you can’t reach it. He feels an uncomfortable feeling that takes over his brother in his presence. Dean had never had the time or the skill to get used to this, to knowing that you are painfully, constrainedly tolerated, like Sam lives in the ghost house. Dean’s not the most consistent being in the world, but the complete inability to comprehend the motives of a person whom head you could get into and look at the world from there, unsettles him. The world’s now swollen, slippery and unyielding, like a dead fish, it has the same white, shallow eyes. The importunity of decay images must mean something. Looks like Dean is a ghost after all, which means he lied to Benny. There is nothing real around.
Benny tries not to smile, as he did when Dean mentioned he played cards for a living. You can read the whole story from the shadow movements in the hollows of his face, when Dean glances at the container of blood under Benny's elbow or considers a question hanging in the air, and Benny watches the fleeting grimaces on Dean's face lit by random stray lights on the road.
