Focused more on spitpaints this week! Still noodling around but doing loose sketchy spits has been nice.
Listening through all the Harry Potter books ... again.
Dear AD, I love your sweet souls for this blog! Do you have any suggestions for perfectionists? I'm looking to get into character design, but I find I get hooked on 'this doesn't look right, I need to do it again' as opposed to 'here's a suggestion of what this character could look like'. Is a high quality rendering of a character in concept art stages important, or is it good so long as it clearly gets the idea across? How do you deal with perfectionist tendencies? Thank you for reading! <3
1—Thanks! We try.
2—Concept art at the outset is about getting your ideas on paper as quickly and understandably as possible. (Save your perfectionism for the key art phase later.) How do you break this perfectionism addiction? BY FORCE. Rigidly timed speed paint practice is the only way. Pick a time of day you can stick to. Set a timer for 30min, or an hour, whatever you can fit in. When that timer goes off YOU PUT THE PENCIL/STYLUS DOWN. And that’s it. Put them all in a folder or put them on instagram or tumblr or a process blog. (It’s better if you share them, then you’re also getting some nice promo work done too, and the fact that you are sharing “imperfect” art will hammer that perfectionist tendency down even harder.) You are not allowed to work on anything more than 1 speed paint period. If you want to pull one out and keep crafting it, that has to be outside the timed periods. You will be a hot mess at first, then you will get faster. You will get better at getting your ideas out with minimal mark making. The art will get better.
If you have trouble coming up with ideas, I recommend something like Reckless Deck so you don’t spend ½ your timer coming up with an idea.
