Overhated and underrated. A lot of people dislike the owl spirit for his aggression. I physically can't.

As we know, the spirits in ATLA are deeply tied to their purpose.

Hei Bai, the forest spirit, became enraged when his forest burned down, for example.

The Painted Lady could not show herself until the river became a river oncemore.

La had panicked when Zhao caught and killed Tui. And, when merged with the Avatar spirit, had set out to eliminate the Fire Nation threat, sparing the Water Tribe citizens.

Wan Shi Tong is an ancient spirit, he's seen so many visitors. Knowledge seekers, coming into his domain, and leaving, so often, to use that knowledge for destruction.

We also know the spirit world and the spirits suffered too, due to the Hundred Year War. The balance of everything was thrown off coarse, and each spirit became more bitter toward humanity.

Wan Shi Tong had explicitly told the Gaang about his distain for human discord and selfishness. He'd warned them against it. And, from his perspective, they only came here to take, take, take. Take advantage of him.

Everything up until he's banished is still the same, but like a week or two, he realizes he left Azula with the man who burned like a third of his face. After begging Iroh to go back to Caldera, Zuko can search for the Avatar while Iroh looks after His little sister, and Iroh refusing Zuko goes to plotting. A month later, Zuko just decides to straight up leave. Travel the earth kingdom and force Iroh and the crew to go back to the fire nation.

It works, Iroh is back with Azula, and Zuko is traveling, seeking the Avatar but finding scorched earth instead.

On his birthday is when he realizes that the Avatar hunt is a wild goose chase, and a week after that, he stumbles into Hei Bai's village and gets ate.

Agni can't do anything, too preoccupied trying to limit the destruction of the fire nation, trying to limit or take away the gift he gave them, so he asks Tui and La for advice and they send The Dark Water Spirit.

The dark water spirit escorts zuko back to the human realm, and they stick together.

The blue spirit recommends they head to the sun warriors and, while bonding, gives zuko a minor ability to waterbend. An ability zuko will not realize or notice he has for six months.

After the sun warriors, they meet Jet. Gets discovered and kicked out a month later, then settles in a little town with docs. Every time the fire nation tries to occupy the town, the Blue Spirit chases them off.

A few months after the one year mark of the blue spirit settling in that town, Katara frees Aang from the ice berg.
