Danny leaves amity after a reveal gone wrong and goes to new york because his obsession is less likely to act up there with the avengers, he doesn't expect to find any ghost stuff over there aside from shades and blob ghosts- maybe a few full formed ghosts, but that's about it. so it's a complete surprise when he stumbles upon a necklace with...mineralized ectoplasm? inside of it- obviously he grabs the ectoplasm (because it will contaminate whatever person is carrying it and the GIW will come after them if they sense it) so he phases his hand through it and nabs the stone, then continues on his way
Doctor strange, meanwhile, is freaking out, because someone managed to steal the stone from his extremely well warded necklace?? he tries to find it with magic but it just points him to a kid so clearly it was stolen by a sorcerer powerful enough to redirect even his spells, so he teams up with the avengers (because a sorcerer the powerful with the time stone is most definitely an avenger level threat) and they try to find who has the stone and figure out what they want and they just. cannot find them
Danny has been squatting in an abandoned (and partially destroyed from one of the many invasions) building, and as such has kept the ectoplasm rock inside of his body so that nobody can steal it and get contaminated, or use it as a power source- this strange man also keeps walking in his direction, cursing, and leaving, but danny is ignoring that because he is living his best life and he does NOT want to deal with any weird, non-ghost thing
