My first craft beer from Staarup Håndbryg, and boy was I sceptical, when I read that jalapeños were included to the brew. The taste experience is not spicy at all, but more sweet malt with notes of caramel and jalapeños in the aftertaste. While yesterday’s beer was an explosion of citrus fruits, today’s La Phrodisiaque was a powerhouse of spice - ginger and ginseng to be precise, along with some Hibiscus to soften it out, ... all of which shouldn’t be a surprise seeing that this was the creation of one who calls himself l’Herbièriste. By all rights, Beau's The Spice Principle should be an undrinkable mess. I mean, a weissbier made with 12(!!) spices including cumin, turmeric, black pepper, and mustard? Not something that screams – or even politely suggests – that it will be a tasty and refreshing beverage. And yet, and yet – it’s not bad. In fact, I’d go so far as to say that it’s rather good. The base beer is a well-made weizen, with the expected notes of banana and clove, and the dozen spices are nicely integrated and balanced, offering a progression of flavours across the palate – cinnamon here, cardamom there, coriander in-between – with the pokey ones like pepper, ginger, and cayenne providing a pleasant hit of heat in the finish. It’s not something I’d drink every day, but as a flavour experiment, it’s a success.
