addendum to my post about abled trans men who consider transness to be a medical condition
I ruffled quite a few trans-dude feathers with my post about my discomfort as a disabled trans person with abled trans men describing their transness or transness itself as a medical condition. Much of the anger was them interpreting me as saying that I had a problem with abled trans men considering their dysphoria to be a medical condition, which I actually don't have a problem with.
The trick to simultaneously accepting that gender dysphoria (in any form) can be a medical condition and that transness itself is not a medical condition...
is giving up the trans-man-centric idea that the defining characteristic of trans experience is dysphoria and its alleviation.
The defining characteristic of trans experience is identifying as a gender (this category includes non-binary genders) other than the one prescribed at birth/childhood, period. This may imply dysphoria, but is not the same thing as dysphoria. Dysphoria can be alleviated. Being trans can't.

Sounds like ‘Stasia. Remember when she used to eat all of our (okay, mostly yours and like…two of my) books?
SHE ATE LIKE THREE PENS. HOW DID THAT EVEN TASTE GOOD???? SHOULDN'T SHE HAVE STOPPED AFTER THE FIRST ONE???
Awe, I made him mad. Oops.
My favorite story about Spencer is when he was getting Spiderman stuff painted on his nails in this huge toy store in New York and a little boy came up and stared for a couple minutes and then dragged his parents over asking to get his painted and saying "SEE? BOYS CAN GET THEIR NAILS DONE TOO!"
